EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has become a widely popular trauma intervention. But as psychoanalysts, we must ask:
Is symptom relief always healing?
What happens when trauma is “processed” without being symbolically worked through?
A recent case series (Kapusta et al., 2024) explores EMDR-induced psychotic episodes in PTSD patients, revealing how rapid trauma exposure without sufficient containment may trigger severe dissociative or psychotic reactions in vulnerable individuals.
While EMDR may offer relief for some, we must remain cautious of quick fixes that bypass the psychic work of mourning, meaning-making, and symbolization.
Healing is not about deleting pain,
it’s about giving it meaning.
