Yet, according to WHO, only 10% of the global need for transplants is being met.

Critical challenges in access include:

➡️ immunosuppression risks
➡️ unequal access

Despite these challenges, promising advances in organ preservation, genetic engineering, and precision immunosuppression offer hope.

In a medical world-first, surgeons at Cleveland Clinic have successfully replaced a heart valve through a small neck incision, completely avoiding the need to open the chest.

Using robotic tools, Dr. Marijan Koprivanac led the team in performing transcervical aortic valve replacements on four patients, all of whom recovered quickly and with minimal pain. One patient even resumed running within a week.

The technique, adapted from robotic thymectomy, uses four small incisions and offers faster recovery, lower risk, and greater precision.

The team now aims to reduce surgery time and expand the procedure to other centers.

„Anlass zu ernsthaften Bedenken“: Fast die Hälfte der Menschen verzichtet laut einer Studie auf das Händewaschen nach dem Klo – und das in einem Krankenhaus. In einer Untersuchung der britischen Universität Surrey benutzten in einer dänischen Klinik 43,7 Prozent der Klobesucher:innen nicht das Waschbecken. In manchen Wochen lag der Anteil sogar bei 61,8 Prozent.

Die Studienautor:innen warnen: Händewaschen nach dem Toilettengang sei deutlich weniger selbstverständlich, als oft angenommen werde. Für die Untersuchung wurden in zwei öffentlich zugänglichen Toilettenräumen des Spitals Sensoren angebracht – direkt an den WCs und an den Wasserleitungen der Waschbecken. Die Nutzung wurde über 19 Wochen lang ausgewertet. (MR)
