The third edition of the Brain Health School Challenge: Finland was once again a wonderful success, highlighting how motivated Finnish students are to protect and nurture their brains!🧠

A big thank you to the Finnish Neurological Society, Neurocenter Finland, and our regional coordinator Juulia Taavitsainen for making the implementation of this edition such a success.

The Brussels Neurology Declaration sets out a clear call to action: to strengthen neurological care, research, and policy across Europe, and to ensure that brain health becomes a recognised public health priority. At its core, the declaration highlights the urgent need for coordinated action to reduce the burden of neurological disorders and improve outcomes for people affected.

The first priority — promoting brain health for all — is the foundation of this vision. It emphasises prevention, early intervention, and a life-course approach to brain health, recognising that many neurological conditions can be delayed or mitigated through awareness, healthier environments, and better access to care.

As Prof. Matilde Leonardi highlights, brain health is not only a medical issue, but a societal one. It requires collaboration across sectors, stronger policies, and a shared commitment to equity — ensuring that everyone, everywhere, has the opportunity to protect and improve their brain health.

Investing in brain health today means improving quality of life, reducing healthcare burden, and shaping a healthier future for generations to come.

We were pleased to see EAN President Prof. Elena Moro, joined by Dr Khachik Petrosyan, member of the EAN Communication Committee, being welcomed in Armenia by First Deputy Minister of Health Lena Nanushyan.

The meeting highlighted the importance of international collaboration in strengthening neurological care and advancing healthcare systems. Discussions also included:

➡️ Important initiatives and upcoming programs planned within the framework of international cooperation.
➡️ The launch and implementation of the National Brain Health Campaign in Armenia within the framework of the “Brain Health Mission”.

Lena Nanushyan noted that “The state and the government stand by citizens, making healthcare a more accessible, effective and prevention-based system. Joint programs with our international partners are an important contribution to the development of neurological services in Armenia and saving human lives”

We look forward to continuing this important partnership to support prevention, improve care, and advance brain health.

For our May paper of the month, we have selected the paper: Timing of Initiation and Efficacy of Dual Antiplatelet Therapy in Minor Stroke or High-Risk TIA

"Overall, this large real-world analysis reinforces the urgency of early DAPT initiation after minor stroke or high-risk TIA and suggests that benefit may diminish progressively beyond the first day, with an estimated threshold around 42 hours."

On 17 March 2026, the European Academy of Neurology brought together 42 presidents and representatives of national neurological societies from across Europe and beyond.

On this day, the Brussels Neurology Declaration was signed.

This joint commitment sets out a shared vision for the next decade. It responds to the growing neurological needs across Europe — from demographic change and disease burden to workforce challenges and rapid scientific advances.

The Declaration defines seven common priority areas for neurology:

1. To promote Brain Health for all
2. To support equal treatment access and funding
3. To foster prevention and improve the overall care for neurological disorders
4. To strengthen neurology workforce
5. To boost interventional neurology
6. To advance research and innovation
7. To integrate technologies & AI in neurology practice

It sends a strong, unified message: neurology must be prioritised within health systems, research agendas, and policy discussions if we are to meet Europe’s health challenges.

With this Declaration, we reinforce our commitment to collaboration and advocacy, working together to shape the future of neurology for patients, professionals, and society.

A fantastic day at Clontarf Castle for the IICN Annual Conference! EAN Past President & BHM Co-Chair, Prof. Paul Boon delivered the Noel Callaghan Guest Lecture, providing overview at the scale of neurological disorders today.

The Facts:
💡43% of the global population is now affected by neurological conditions—the #1 cause of disability worldwide.
💡 €1.7 trillion: The annual cost of brain disorders in Europe, now matching cancer, CVD, and diabetes combined.
💡The Mission: We must move toward a holistic "Brain Health" model that addresses lifestyle and environmental factors throughout a patient's life.

It was excellent to see record-breaking numbers in Dublin. We are already looking forward to welcoming the IICN delegation and our Irish colleagues to the EAN Congress in Geneva (June 27–30)!

Make sure to stop by and visit the IICN team at the Neurohood during the Congress.
