If you’re supporting a family member, partner, or friend living with a psychosocial disability, we highly recommend you attend Mental Health Carers Australia’s upcoming webinar.

With all the changes in the NDIS, this is a good opportunity to learn all the latest about the NDIS reform process. They’ll provide an update on their position on the changes, and provide a small, safe space to talk about what’s working in psychosocial supports, what’s missing, and the changes that could make a difference.

You have to be a Mental Health Carers Australia member to attend, but membership is free and extremely worthwhile.

Today we recognise the impact of overdoses on families and friends and acknowledge the grief felt by those who’ve lost someone to overdose. It’s also an opportunity attention to how we can reduce the risk of overdose - which includes making sure that mental health services are welcoming and inclusive to all.

The International Overdose Awareness Day website has a great range of information and resources. Check it out here: https://www.overdoseday.com/

Today is Wear It Purple Day, which is all about creating a safe and supportive environment for LGBTIQA+ youth.

LGBTIQA+ young people face mental health challenges at a far higher rate than others, and the support of family, friends and community is the biggest factor that improves their wellbeing.

It’s so important for them to know they're supported and celebrated, and today is a great chance to do so. So let’s show them we’ve got their back!

The Wear It Purple Day website has a section specifically for parents. Check it out here: https://www.wearitpurple.org/

Today is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day! 🖤💛❤️

This year's theme, 'Little Footsteps, Big Future' is all about listening to and nurturing children’s voices and dreams - one of the many important reasons why we stand alongside and support First Nations families, carers and communities.

For more information, see SNAICC-National Voice for our Children.

Also take some time to check out V***A - Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency, who are part of a partnership supporting families, carers, supporters and kin through the South East Metro Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect Centre: https://www.vacca.org/page/our-services/community-support/south-east-metro-mental-health-and-wellbeing-connect-centre/

At age 65, James (name deidentified) thought he was entering a more relaxed phase of his life. He was still working and enjoying spending time with his extended family and young grandchildren. Then everything changed almost overnight.

His daughter experienced a relationship breakdown, separated from her partner and entered a shared parenting relationship with him. Her mental health began to deteriorate - and over the next six years, she experienced five extended hospitalisations in multiple hospital settings, along with long separations from her children.

As there was no one else to step in, James assumed the role of primary carer for his daughter and took over the additional responsibilities of assisting her in raising her very young family. Around the same time, his elderly father suffered the first of a series of strokes.

A carer support person James met at one meeting told him "you won’t be listened to on your own—you need to join Tandem.” Realising that individual advocacy efforts alone will not yield results and that you need to be part of a community for your voice to be heard, he joined Tandem about 5 years ago and has never looked back.

Thanks so much to the Tandem member who shared this story, which will be familiar to many. Read the rest here: https://tandemcarers.org.au/p/Contents/Stories/Member-stories/James%27%20story.aspx

This week marks a very significant NAIDOC Week - its 50th anniversary!

This year’s theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy", honours the legacy of past generations of First Nations people who've worked towards a better future, as well as the young leaders shaping the future.

We’re proud to walk alongside our partners at Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation Inc and First Nations communities on the journey toward healing and justice. ❤️💛🖤

Content note: the text below contains subject matter that may be distressing.

In response the alleged incidents in childcare centres across Melbourne, the Victorian government has made a range of services and resources available.

This includes a dedicated hotline on 1800 791 241 to support impacted families with advice and access to services, staffed 8am to 9pm weekdays and 8am to 5pm weekdays.

They’ve also created a central website to provide information and resources to support families, at https://www.vic.gov.au/childcare-centres-investigation

27/06/2025

The Australian Productivity Commission interim review has found the National Mental Health and Su***de Prevention Agreement to be “fundamentally flawed” and “not fit for purpose”. Its major failings include:

❌ No arrangements to provide psychosocial supports outside the NDIS
❌ No funding for key commitments
❌ Lack of voice for people with lived and living experience
❌ No accountability for outcomes

The interim report has been published with a ‘What we’ve heard so far’ paper, which reflects some of Tandem’s recommendations calling for future co-design, more accessible services and greater accountability.

Submissions on the interim report are open until 31 July 2025. Read the report and have your say at https://www.pc.gov.au/inquiries/current/mental-health-review
