NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK
MONDAY 19th – SUNDAY 25th MAY 2025

“Connecting Communities”

It’s National Volunteer Week and this year the theme is “Connecting Communities”.

The theme represents the millions of volunteers Australia wide who make a profound impact in their communities and on society, through giving a little time and making a world of difference. The power of volunteering brings people together.

National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of over 6 million volunteers.

Here at GDR, we too sincerely thank all our volunteers for their mighty work to ensure that our great radio station continues.

After losing her 18-year-old son in a tragic accident, Sarah told colleagues she didn’t want to talk about it. Certain milestones or memories would trigger emotions. She kept saying she was fine when she obviously wasn’t.

Sarah's manager noticed the change and called the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to find out ways she could support Sarah through her bereavement. Having someone genuinely care and persist with checking in inspired her to get the extra help she needed.

Today, Sarah openly shares her experience with colleagues and normalises talking about mental health in her role as Distribution Centre Manager for Linfox. Her top tips for building a work environment where everyone feels safe showing up as themselves, confident checking in with one another and comfortable having difficult conversations, are:
✅Ask about more than work
✅Include all staff, not just those who are in the office
✅Create simple, low-cost opportunities for connection
