Arianne and David attended Old Ballan Cemetery for a quiet but special burial service. The cemetery looks very sparce and it is also very dry at this time of year. It was opened in 1850 but was not used much after 1875 when a new cemetery was built near Ballan. An interesting (and also sad) story about it was compiled by the abc a couple of years ago regarding it’s history and recent use by State Trustees for people with no family to arrange a funeral: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-02-24/state-trustee-burials-at-old-ballan-cemetery/103442228?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_n

We were honoured to have a traditional smoking ceremony conducted by Ronnie at a funeral service in late 2025.

This ceremony is a tradition of First Nations People of Australia involving the burning of native eucalyptus leaves (or other native plants). The smoke wards off evil spirits and guides the deceased to the spirit world.

Permission to use image from the funeral service was provided by family.

Rhae’s passion for her garden and butterflies was remembered at her recent funeral. Her family lovingly made butterflies to flutter amongst the flowers in her casket sheaf.
