๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Vale, Dr John Mickan AM ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

The RFDS honours the life and legacy of Dr John Mickan AM, one of South Australiaโ€™s first flying doctors. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ

Dr Mickan was the last surviving member of the pioneering trio of doctors, alongside the late Dr Robert Cooter AM and Dr John Thompson OAM, who helped establish the RFDS Port Augusta Base in 1955.

Together, they laid the foundation for the life-saving service that continues to operate across rural and remote Australia.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ โ€œHe was 50 years out of Port Augusta and there are all these people still up there saying, โ€˜He was my doctor โ€” he delivered me and then he delivered my kidsโ€™. Itโ€™s an incredible history and weโ€™re very proud of him.โ€ โ€“ Phil, Dr Mickanโ€™s son

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr Mickanโ€™s family and all those whose lives he touched.

๐Ÿ—ฃ "Nine years ago as a 17-year-old I was lucky enough to have RFDS there when I needed help and had to be flown to Adelaide from Bordertown. It goes to show if youโ€™re good at something, use it to your advantage and find a way to work it into your fundraising. Keep the positivity going team and the kilometres coming!"

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ Local South Aussie, Kaity, has been clocking up the kilometres and selling homemade RFDS-inspired cookies to raise funds for the Flying Doctor this month.

So far, supporters across the country have helped us raise almost $3.2M during our Oceans to Outback Challenge so far! ๐Ÿคฉ

Today is World Mental Health Day โ€“ an important reminder to take the time to check in on friends and loved ones. A chat can be more than a chat. ๐ŸŒป

It's also a great chance to recognise the vital work of our RFDS Mental Health & Wellbeing Team, who knows the power of a meaningful yarn โ€“ particularly for those living in isolated areas of the country.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Unlike other clinicians, the team leave the equipment behind, relying on deep engagement and therapeutic dialogue to support mental health outcomes.

Over the past year, the team has delivered more than 850 face-to-face consultations across SA and the NT.

Congratulations to the 2025 recipients of the Bill Williams and John Short Scholarship โ€“ a valued program that has, for more than six years, supported the ongoing learning and development of RFDS SA/NT staff. ๐Ÿ‘

This scholarship is made possible thanks to Bill Williams, a long-time supporter of the RFDS with deep ties to the outback.

With more than 50 years of involvement โ€“ first as a bush policeman and resident of remote Australia โ€“ Bill has witnessed the challenges of delivering health care in the most isolated areas of our country. Heโ€™s even guided RFDS aircraft to land safely on remote airstrips after dark. โœˆ๏ธ

After the passing of his partner, John Short, Bill chose to honour their shared values in a deeply practical way โ€“ by helping to grow the skills of those who provide life-saving care across SA and the NT.

๐Ÿ’™ We thank Bill for his enduring commitment and generous support โ€“ and we celebrate the dedicated staff whose learning journeys he continues to empower.

๐Ÿ“œ Our very own scholarship recipients for 2025 are: Chloe Gore, Mel Roberts and (pictured above) Edisson Garcia, Bilal Ghouze and Amber Cribb.

Stay safe this long weekend! โค๏ธ

As you take a well-deserved break with family and friends, our crews will be in the air and on the ground, ready to respond and providing help to those that need it. โœˆ๏ธ

Please take care and be patient on the roads, especially if youโ€™re travelling out bush this holiday period. ๐Ÿš—

Thanks for having us, William Creek Outback Fly-In! ๐Ÿ‘

Every year, dozens of aircraft and people from all over Australia converge on the remote town for a weekend of aviation presos, footy and outback hospitality. โœˆ๏ธ

It was great to walk visitors through our Virtual Emergency Centre and spruik a bit of health education! ๐Ÿฉบ

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Our Oceans to Outback challenge is officially underway... and Susanne from Yorke Peninsula is leading the pack!

A former remote area nurse, Susanne has already raised $6,700 for the RFDS โ€“ the highest in the country!

From selling homemade pickles and jams to rallying her community, her dedication is inspiring. She's aiming to walk 500km this month, alongside the 20,000 participants across Australia committing to their own fitness goals.

๐Ÿ‘ On ya, Susanne!
