La Trobe University students Emily and Brianna reflect on their journey with Jeanie Global's Rural Areas Experience program, saying the experience gave them the opportunity to make connections with the community and learn the importance of stable rural healthcare πͺ
"Even though I grew up in a rural town, I had absolutely no idea about the barriers people face. When patients are required to travel to another town for oral healthcare - even just grocery shopping - it can disrupt the local economy," says Emily.
The program left the students feeling excited for their futures and with a realisation they can achieve bigger goals than they first thought.
"I chose this career because I wanted a job where I can help people. Taking my skills to a rural location where there's a greater need is definitely on the cards for my future," says Brianna.
"I would love to join the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and provide oral healthcare to those who are geographically disadvantaged in remote SA and the NT. I may only be one person, but I know that working rural would be a small step to help change the future of the rural health sector," says Emily.
"If you ever get the opportunity to have a rural experience with Jeanie Global, just take it! You never know what you might discover - not just about yourself, but how you can help be the change the regional health sector needs."
