It’s 2:17 am. Your elderly mother has a fever that won’t settle. You’re not sure if it’s serious.

This is what 24-7 means.

⭕ It means the lights are on.
⭕ It means a specialist-led emergency doctor is there.
⭕ It means you don’t have to wait until morning to wonder.

Emergencies don’t work business hours.
Neither do we.

📚 Term 1 is back, and asthma flare-ups often follow. When school and work routines restart, respiratory viruses spread more easily. Heat, smoke, increased sports, and disrupted medication routines can all trigger asthma symptoms, not just in children, but in adults, too.

Early warning signs can include:
• Worsening cough or wheeze
• Chest tightness
• Shortness of breath
• Needing your reliever more often

The most important step?
✅ Update your Asthma Action Plan
✅ Check that your preventer and reliever are in date
✅ Know when to seek urgent care

If symptoms escalate quickly, call 000 immediately.

We’ve put together a practical guide to help you recognise the signs early and prepare this school term properly.

When AI plays doctor, the consequences can be real. ED Horror Stories

AI tools are everywhere, and many people are now turning to them for health advice. But when it comes to emergencies, algorithms can’t assess pain, spot subtle warning signs, or make life-saving decisions.

We’re seeing the real-world impact when AI advice delays care or gives false reassurance. In an emergency, that delay can matter.

City of Adelaide heat update (1:09 pm): It’s 38°C today, and we’re seeing more patients with dehydration.
Current wait time at Calvary Adelaide Hospital Emergency Department: ~26 minutes.

Meet Grace, one of our Registered Nurses in the ED. She’s part of the team keeping care calm, clear, and moving quickly when you need us most.

Stay hydrated today:

⭕Sip water regularly (don’t wait until you feel thirsty)
⭕Avoid alcohol and go easy on caffeine
⭕Stay in shade/air-conditioning where you can
⭕If you’re outside, take breaks and rehydrate often

Check on kids, older family members, and anyone exercising. Get help urgently if you have: dizziness/fainting, confusion, severe headache, vomiting, very dark urine, or you stop sweating and feel hot.

With Adelaide in motion during the Santos Tour Down Under, it’s a timely reminder that sport and speed can sometimes lead to injuries from wrists and shoulders to collarbones and ribs.

Across Care 24-7 emergency departments, our teams work closely with our hospital partners’ orthopaedic services to support patients who need specialist input and follow-on care.

That specialist support is part of what helps deliver clear next steps, from assessment and imaging through to orthopaedic management and recovery support.

Australia’s heatwave is hitting hard - stay safe and hydrated.

Much of the country is experiencing extreme temperatures, with parts of South Australia, Victoria, NSW and beyond facing sustained heat well above 40 °C, and forecasts warning of potential record-breaking highs this week.

High heat increases the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, children, outdoor workers and those with existing medical conditions.

Stay safe with these tips:
💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty.
🏠 Stay indoors during peak heat (11 am–3 pm) in cool, shaded or air-conditioned spaces.
👕 Wear light, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat if you must go outside.

Know the warning signs:
😵 Dizziness, extreme thirst or dark urine
🔥 Heavy sweating, rapid pulse
🤕 Headache, nausea or confusion
These can be early signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration.

If symptoms worsen, or you’re unsure, our specialist-led emergency departments at Calvary Adelaide Hospital, Buderim Private Hospital and Calvary Health Care in Hobart - Lenah Valley and St John’s Hospitals are open 24/7 to help you and your family. Your emergency, our priority.
