Another conference! This time the 3rd Congress of Asia Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society. A strong contingent from South Australia, with a good mix of orthoptists, ophthalmologists, and optometrists. Team work makes the dream work.

Wonderful discussions on universal vision screening, myopia management and binocular vision disorders. We even taught a few ophthalmologists how to fit Fresnel prisms!

We all can't wait for a busy few days of learning, sharing ideas and catching up with colleagues. Brisbane, here we come!

We are frequently asked, "so what's the difference between an orthoptist, ophthalmologist and optometrist?" We all work with the visual system, and yet our roles differ.

As orthoptists at Adelaide Eye Therapy, we work with both optometrists and ophthalmologists on a daily basis. We co-manage patients depending on their condition, to best optimise visual outcomes for patients. Orthoptists like nothing more than a "tricky" patient .... usually because the trickiness comes from a disorder of binocular vision and this is our thing! Orthoptists undergo specialist binocular vision training over a four year university degree, and this is an area that we are proficient and passionate about. Everyone we see has a disorder of binocular vision (whether due to a childhood or acquired strabismus, head injury or neurological condition) to some degree, and our job is to determine what this is, how to treat it, and when to refer on for surgery if this is indicated.
