Common mistakes beginner freedivers can make. Part 1

Freediving is the extreme sport of relaxation 🤣 It requires knowledge, skill, patience, and a healthy respect for safety. Here are some common mistakes beginners can make:

Holding Their Breath Too Long
* Mistake: Ignoring their limits and pushing for a deeper or longer dive than they’re ready for.
* Why It’s Dangerous: This can lead to shallow water blackout or hypoxia. It can also create unnecessary stress on your nervous system that hinders progression.
* Solution: Listen to your body and ascend when you feel the urge to breathe.

Improper Equalisation
* Mistake: Failing to equalise pressure properly, leading to ear barotrauma.
* Why It’s Dangerous: It can cause severe pain or permanent damage.
* Solution: Learn and practice equalisation techniques like Frenzel or Valsalva.

Lack of Proper Training
* Mistake: Skipping formal freediving education.
* Why It’s Dangerous: Freediving involves specific techniques and safety knowledge.
* Solution: Enroll in a certified freediving course to learn from professionals. You will be surprised at how much you can learn in one course!

Rushing Progress
* Mistake: Advancing too quickly can overwhelm the mind, creating fear or stress that hinders confidence and enjoyment.
* Why It’s Dangerous: Stress and fear from rushing can impact your mental state, making it harder to stay calm and focused underwater.
* Solution: Focus on gradual improvements and mastering skills step by step to stay relaxed and build trust in your abilities.

Overthinking
* Mistake: Becoming overly focused on performance, techniques, or potential risks while diving.
* Why It’s Dangerous: Overthinking can increase stress and cause hesitation, affecting your ability to remain calm and efficient underwater.
* Solution: Trust your training, stay present in the moment, and focus on relaxation and enjoyment during the dive.

By understanding and avoiding these mistakes, you can enjoy freediving safely and make the most of your time underwater. Patience and consistency are key to a safe and enjoyable freediving journey. You got this 💪😁

Just completed a spearo introduction course with .murray7 and putting them through the basics of equipment, identifying good spots, safety in the water, local fish species, hunting techniques, gun safety, local rules and regulations, etiquette and much much more. But most of all improving their efficiency & bottom time, easily doubling the bottom time they already had with very simple relaxation and breathing techniques you learn through the amazing sport of freediving. Great to see these two pick it up so fast and can’t wait to witness their journey into the world of spearfishing.

Like most that venture into this world you instantly appreciate the beauty and connection to nature you have by spending time in the water. Not only that but how much you learn to respect ocean life using the most sustainable way possible to bring home food for the family.

If you have been looking to get into spearfishing and want to take part in a “spearo introduction” course simply flick us a message and we can help help you begin your journey. ✌️🤙

Check out our student mastering feet-first free immersion! 🤿 Wondering why we opt for this technique? It serves as the the initial step in the open water environment. The relaxed body posture facilitates smoother equalisation, a vital skill in the art of freediving. 🔄

Several factors make a head-up position easier for beginners, with one key factor being the soft palate. When the head is down during a dive, the soft palate tends to move upward and backward, creating a closure that obstructs the connection between nasal passages and the throat. This closure hinders the smooth flow of air between the throat and the ears, making the equalisation process challenging. Consequently, new freedivers may face difficulty equalising their ears in a head-down position.

Instructors often use feet-first free immersion for safety, communication and close monitoring during training. This technique allows for real-time feedback, building confidence and effective demonstration of proper form. It allows me to be in close proximity to students, ensuring a safer and more supportive learning experience.

Equalisation can be a challenge for some but its essential to balance pressure inside and outside the body as water pressure increases during descent. This challenge is often a factor that deters people from venturing into freediving initially. However, I want to emphasise that nearly everyone can acquire these essential skills with practice. Keep honing your abilities, and the body’s remarkable adaptability will prevail 💪👂

The feeling you get when you swim through the light beam is otherworldly 🪐 🌌

Embark on a magical journey through the enchanting landscape of Mt. Gambier, where sinkholes weave a mesmerising tale of geological wonders and nature’s charm. Picture a time when the land was an ancient ocean haven. Over countless years, the lost lives of fantastical marine organisms formed deep layers of limestone, creating a canvas for the unfolding story.
Now, enter the gentle hero of our narrative – groundwater. Like a mystical force, rainwater delicately infiltrates the earth, initiating a graceful dance with the limestone. This dance, known as carbonation or carbonic acid dissolution, is a slow and enchanting process. Imagine limestone gracefully dissolving, crafting secret underground realms and creating delicate undulations in the earth’s tapestry.
Fast forward 4,500 years to a volcanic spectacle that altered the magical narrative. Gases from the volcanic spectacle combined with rainwater, concocting a powerful potion – a heightened form of carbonic acid that accelerated the limestone dissolution. Mt. Gambier, now transformed, revealed itself as a realm touched by the hand of enchantment.
Yet, not all enchantments are visible to the naked eye. Many sinkholes remain hidden underground, patiently waiting for their moment – whether it’s a mystical reveal or a delightful discovery through the art of cave exploration.
The ongoing natural spectacle in Mt. Gambier unfolds at its own unhurried pace, offering a glimpse into the enduring geological history and distinctive character of the region. The existing sinkholes are silent storytellers, revealing the landscape’s richness in magical experiences. What sets Mt. Gambier sinkholes apart is not just their concentrated abundance, but the concealed treasure within—each one cradling a secret reservoir of pristine, drinkable rainwater. They stand as nature’s well-guarded gems, waiting to be discovered in the intricate tapestry of enchantment. 🌍✨

Reconnect and Regain Your Resilience!

SO WHAT IS PRIMAL MINDS ABOUT?

Primal minds is about establishing an alternative health and wellness community within Adelaide that is focused on strengthening mind and body by reconnecting you with the Healing Forces of Nature.

We are all about escaping your comfort zone and challenging fear head on so you can push past your limitations and reawaken the connection you have with yourself and the people around you.

Mindset is like a muscle so we must work it out. We understand that when we choose some form of discomfort we are guiding our own personal growth and when this struggle feels beyond our control, we truly learn who we are and what we're capable of. Balance this with some form of reflection and we really can fortify our mental state.
