Many women don’t anticipate or talk about during Menopause and Perimenopause is Brain Fog.

Brain fog is not a medical term but describes a feeling of mental fuzziness, foggy thinking and difficulty processing information.

In other words, your brain feels like mush, your memory is taking a nap and your mind isn’t as sharp and quick as it used to be.

This can create thoughts that our bodies are letting us down or fear that we are in some sort of cognitive decline.

Concerns about changes in cognitive function are valid and legitimate!

Actually, 60% of menopausal or perimenopausal women experience a level of brain fog during the hormonal and neurological transition state.

Brain god can look like:
➡️ short term memory recall problems such as forgetting names and dates
➡️difficulty concentrating or lacking focus
➡️feeling mentally fatigued
➡️losing your train of thought and struggling to find the right word or phrase
➡️ difficultly following a conversation

On average, symptoms pass.
However it does raise concern that during the vulnerable stage of Perimenopause that symptoms may persist and cognitive performance may decline.

So what can be done to lift the fog?

The naturopathic approach considers a number of factors:
- addressing inflammation: neuro-inflammation and inflammation or changes in the gut microbiome which may be initiating or perpetuating neuro-inflammation
- supporting the brain and body adjust to the hormonal change

With: anti-inflammatory foods, key brain nutrients and the stars of brain support herbs: Rosemary, Curcumin, St John’s Wort, Bacopa - to name a few!
And hormone support herbs such as Sage, Vitex and D**g Quai.

Perimenopause, where the brain undergoes a neurological transition stage is one of the critical times to be nurturing the health of our brains.
 
➡️ the right foods can nourish and support the brain, providing a foundation for healthy cognition: to think and communicate clearly, perform daily tasks, process emotions, make decisions and lead a productive life.
 
🥑 Choosing the best brain foods that are high in anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory, as well as supplying your brain with essential nutrients and essential fats are easy to add to your diet:
 
-              Start with leaf greens: spinach, broccoli, bok choy
-              Add a healthy fat: avocado, flaxseed oil or olive oil
-              Fatty fish: such as tuna, salmon or sardines
-              Include Berries: blueberries and blackberries
-              Add or grate some turmeric into your meal
-              Finish wish a warming hot raw cacoa or piece of good quality dark chocolate

🚺Perimenopause is considered a hormonal and reproductive transition state … when in fact a lot of the symptoms are neurological, including:

🔴Mood and depression
🔴insomnia
🔴 temperature dysregulation
🔴cognitive dysfunction


This period can be particularly challenging as the brain adjusts to a decrease in estrogen, which it has depended on for the regulation of many body systems.

However, it is also an excellent time to focus on brain health. 🧠
Taking care of cognitive function can not only help alleviate or prevent symptoms but also provide long-term protective benefits for your overall health.

Did you know that many symptoms experienced during Perimenopause are largely Neurological? 🌸
 
💗Estrogen regulates many functions via the many oestrogen receptors in the brain.
During a drop in hormones, this can disrupt sleep, circadian rhythm, thermoregulation (think night sweats) and many areas of cognitive function.
 
Perimenopause is a small window of opportunity to prevent neurological diseases.
 
It can be a fragile time while the body and the brain readjust.

It can be a tipping point where small health problems can become greater, or a time to really focus on your health and give your brain and body the nourishment it needs.

Mothers Day can raise so many feelings in many of us. Family and mother wounds and loss , pregnancy loss and fertility challenges - and those with grown children or raising children experiencing a range of struggles or estrangement in families.

This Mothers Day I’d like to honour and respect the multitude of emotions and experiences this day may bring, and honour the very real, painful, gut wrenching experience of being a mother or a daughter and appreciate the power, beauty and strength in every one of us, wherever we are on the Mother experience.

Motherhood can be intense, sad or painful and where ever you are on the motherhood journey, and whether you are experience joy and connection today or some grief and sadness , know that you are not alone, you are a good and wonderful woman and doing the very best you can. 💕

I also would like to acknowledge our Mother Earth, who teaches us so much every day if we stop pause observe and listen, and who brings us the gift of traditional and herbal medicine is which gentle, nourishing, powerful and deep acting, just like Nature herself.

Whateever your experience today, if its happiness, joy or some challenges, I want to embrace and honour all women and the entire spectrum of the wild and intense ride of womanhood.

During this phase, our hormones need proper nourishment too!
It’s crucial to have a balanced plate with all three macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates (starches), and fat. Each plays a vital role in maintaining health and supporting metabolic flexibility.

🍏Ensuring a mix of these nutrients helps your body, particularly the mitochondria in your cells, switch efficiently between burning fat and glucose.

On the flip side, mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to insulin resistance and weight gain, especially around the midsection.

🍎Let’s dive into carbs...
While carbs have faced criticism, when paired with protein and fats in a meal with low glycemic load, they don’t cause insulin resistance or weight gain. Opt for healthy carbs like oats, rice, and potatoes, steering clear of high-gluten refined grains and high-fructose carbohydrates.
