💬 Speech Pathology Week 2025 – Impact through Communication 💬

For Marielle, communication is more than speaking — it’s about connecting, sharing ideas, expressing emotions, and building relationships. It’s the very foundation of learning and participating in the world.

Here’s what she shared with us:
✨ The best part of the job? Seeing progress, no matter how small, and knowing she’s made a difference to someone’s quality of life.
✨ What she wishes more people knew? Speech pathology isn’t just about speech sounds — it includes swallowing, voice, cognition, social communication, language, and more. And it’s not just for kids — adults benefit too!
✨ A proud moment? Supporting a client with Parkinson’s through the LSVT program, and hearing how his family and friends celebrated the improvement in his voice.
✨ How does speech change lives? Regaining or discovering ways to communicate gives people independence, confidence, and connection — and reduces isolation.

That’s the impact of communication 💜

🌟 Speech Pathology Week 2025 🌟

This year’s theme is Impact through Communication — and that’s exactly what speech therapy is all about.

Meet Isabella 👋 She’s been working hard on her functional communication goals — from practicing her homework, to using her skills out in the community. Each step is about building confidence and independence, so she can connect, be heard, and participate fully in everyday life.

💬 Communication is more than just words — it’s about being able to share ideas, make choices, and be part of the world around you. That’s the impact of speech pathology.

💬 Speech Pathology Week 2025 – Impact through Communication 💬

For Abbey, communication means freedom — the freedom to express your thoughts and wishes, to have autonomy, to open doors and remove barriers.

Here’s what she shared with us:
✨ The best part of the job? Seeing her lovely clients every day ☀️☺️
✨ Something she wishes more people knew? Communication is a human right — not something optional.
✨ A proud moment? When a student shadowed her session and was able to understand everything her client said. A huge “Wow!” moment showing how far they had come.
✨ How does speech change lives? From small steps, like enjoying a coffee more comfortably, to big ones, like having autonomy, participating socially, and making decisions.

That’s the impact of communication 💜

💬 Speech Pathology Week 2025 – Impact through Communication 💬

For Stacey, our Speech Pathology Team Leader, communication is so much more than talking - it’s being understood, sharing feelings, enjoying inside jokes, and connecting with others in meaningful ways.

Here’s what she shared with us:
✨ The best part of the job? Our amazing clients, our team, and yes… the snack drawer!
✨ A common myth? We don’t just work on lisps and stutters. Speech pathology is about supporting safe swallowing, finding a voice after stroke, exploring AAC, building language, and so much more.
✨ A proud moment? Watching her speech team “smash goals” and hearing families and support workers celebrate the difference they’re making.
✨ How does speech change lives? Through growing independence, confidence, inclusion, connection, and empowerment.

That’s the impact of communication 💜

🗣️ Speech Pathology Week is here! 🎉

From Sunday, 24 August to Saturday, 30 August, we’re celebrating the theme “Impact through Communication”, honouring all the meaningful ways speech pathologists support and enrich lives.

Each day of the week highlights a different way we make a difference — from building connection, nurturing confidence, and promoting inclusion, to fostering empowerment, opening opportunities, supporting wellbeing, and encouraging independence.

Stay tuned — over the next few days, we’ll be sharing posts that dive into each theme and show the many faces of speech pathology.

Meet our speech team and follow along this week as we share the many ways speech pathology makes a difference. 🤩

👐 Occupational Therapists – what do they actually do?

We hear these myths ALL the time… so let’s bust a few 💥👇

1️⃣ OTs don’t just help people get jobs
2️⃣ We don’t only work with kids (adults need us too!)
3️⃣ It’s not just installing hand rails — therapy is much broader than home modifications
4️⃣ We don’t only work in hospitals — you’ll find OTs in homes, schools, the community, and more
5️⃣ We’re not the same as physios — while we often work closely together, OTs focus on helping people do the daily activities that matter most to them

💡 Think of occupational therapy as helping people do the things that matter most to them — from getting back to work after an injury, to supporting independence at home, to helping kids thrive at school.

1️⃣ Speech pathologists don’t just work on lisps or stutters
2️⃣ We don’t only work with kids (adults need us too!)
3️⃣ It’s not just “playing games” — therapy is carefully planned and goal-directed

💡 Think of speech pathology as helping people communicate and swallow safely across the lifespan - from supporting someone after a stroke, to helping a child find their first words.

✨ It’s Pain Week! ✨

Did you know that persistent pain affects 1 in 5 Australians?

Pain is complex — but movement, education and the right support can make a huge difference.

At MPOT, our physiotherapists and exercise physiologists both play an important role in managing pain. They use modern pain science in their work with clients to:
✅ Improve movement and strength
✅ Manage flare-ups
✅ Build confidence in daily activities
✅ Support wellbeing and function

It’s not just about eliminating pain — it’s about helping people move well, do what matters, and feel empowered in their recovery.

🔷 What is the PEO Model? 🔷

In occupational therapy, we use the PEO model to understand and support our clients in the most meaningful way.

PEO stands for:
👤 Person – your strengths, challenges, values, goals
🌍 Environment – your physical, social, and cultural surroundings
🧩 Occupation – the everyday activities that matter to you

✨ When these three elements fit well together, people can engage in daily life with confidence, comfort, and purpose.

In this post, we break down how the PEO model helps OTs find the best fit — whether it’s through changing the task, adapting the environment, or supporting the person 🛋️👩‍💻🎯

🤔 Physio vs. Exercise Physiology – What’s the Difference?

It’s a common question—and an important one!

🧠 Physiotherapists assess, diagnose, and treat injuries, movement disorders, and pain. They use hands-on techniques (like joint mobilisations, dry needling, and manual therapy) alongside movement-based rehab.

💪 Exercise Physiologists specialise in using exercise as medicine. They create tailored programs to manage chronic conditions (like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis), assist with injury and pain management, and support long-term recovery, function, and fitness.

✨ What They Have in Common:
Both are passionate, university-qualified allied health professionals with a focus on improving your health, mobility and function using exercise.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing a health condition, or working on your wellness goals—we’ve got you covered. 🙌

Book with our physiotherapists or exercise physiologists today! Head to 🔗 the link in our bio, or contact us on 📞 1300 386 141 or ✉️ referrals@mpot.com.au.
