🌟Brain Injury Awareness Week 2025 🌟

Today we kicked off the week in the most inspiring way possible — celebrating our very own, Melissa Hartman.

Melissa’s journey has been one of incredible resilience and determination. From her lived experience to her leadership, she has become a voice of hope and strength in our community. Being nominated for an award 'Embrace life after brain injury award'and stepping up as the host of today’s official launch event was nothing short of extraordinary.

We are beyond proud to see how far Melissa has come, and we are honoured to stand beside her as she continues to inspire others.

💙 This week is all about raising awareness, breaking down barriers, and shining a light on the courage of those living with brain injury.

Catherine House provides a safe place to stay and everyday necessities for women in crisis — and the work they do changes lives.

Highlighting Mel

All of us at Vana Care are beyond proud of everything Mel has achieved. She’s literally come back from the dead, fought through the challenges of a brain injury, and is now using her story to inspire others to learn CPR — because it saved her life.

Her support worker Hollie says:
“It’s been amazing to support Mel as she works toward her goals—whether it’s cooking meals, getting her kids ready for school, or staying committed to the gym. I even jump in on the boxing sessions when she asks, and she’s told me how much it motivates her. With each goal she hits—like speaking publicly, volunteering at the library, and showing up for herself—her confidence grows. I help break things down so it’s not overwhelming, and it’s been incredible to see how far she’s come.”

Week by week, step by step, Mel keeps pushing forward. She’s an incredible mum, a resilient fighter, and a truly inspiring person. We’re so fortunate to walk alongside her on this journey and support her every step of the way.

Trevor Taylor has been a proud and long-standing participant with Vana Care since November 2022. Living with Huntington’s disease, Trevor faces daily challenges that would understandably slow many people down, but not Trevor! His condition has never defined him, nor has it stopped him from living a rich, full life filled with purpose, laughter, and connection.

Over the past few years, our team at Vana Care has had the privilege of supporting Trevor on his journey to maintain independence and stay active in his local community. Whether it’s attending his Huntington’s support group, heading out for regular walks, enjoying a coffee in the sun, or taking scenic drives along the coast, Trevor continues to embrace life with warmth and determination.

One of the highlights of Trevor’s fortnight is his bowling group, where he’s recently achieved a well-earned victory! A proud moment for both him and the support team who’ve cheered him on every step of the way.

Trevor’s story is one of resilience and joy. Despite the obstacles, he continues to show us all what it means to live meaningfully, to stay connected, to laugh often, and to celebrate the small wins that truly matter.
