Christmas can be a lot for neurodivergent young people — even when they’re excited.
🎄 Supporting a Neurodivergent Young Person at Christmas 🎄
(Autistic, ADHD, sensory-sensitive, anxious, or easily overwhelmed)
The holidays often bring noise, crowds, bright lights, strong smells, changed routines, and BIG social expectations. For many young people, that can mean overwhelm, shutdowns, meltdowns, tears, irritability, or needing to “escape” — not because they’re being difficult, but because their nervous system is doing its best to cope.
Here are a few ways we can help:
✅ Make a simple plan (what’s happening + when)
✅ Offer an “out” (quiet room, car break, walk, headphones)
✅ Lower the pressure (“You don’t have to perform excitement”)
✅ Ask before hugs (consent matters, always)
✅ Protect safe foods (no “just try it” battles)
✅ Keep transitions gentle (warnings + countdowns help)
✅ Celebrate in a way that fits them (shorter visit, smaller gathering, sensory-friendly options)
✨ The goal isn’t a “perfect Christmas.”
It’s a supported young person who feels safe, seen, and accepted.
If you’re parenting, caring, teaching, or supporting a neurodivergent young person this season — you’re not alone. 💛
