Happy Speech Pathology Week! This year Adelaide Voice Therapy celebrated the theme of “Impact Through Communication”.

Our team tested our “communication skills” at and managed to conquer Aladdin’s Cave with just seconds to spare!

We then moved on to .bistro and enjoyed a delicious meal, giving us the opportunity to connect. Our days are spent helping people who have challenges with communication and swallowing so these are not things we take for granted and really enjoy! We were so deep in conversation that we forgot to take a team pic 🤦🏽‍♀️ Lucky our resident food photographer Melissa made sure the delectable food wasn’t missed!

It was also fabulous to connect with others working in the field of Head & Neck Cancer at the Australian & New Zealand Head & Neck Cancer Society Workshop on Prehab to Rehab.

It’s been a busy week! But it’s truly a privilege to work alongside this fabulous team 👏🏻 We love what we do and we are honoured to care for the patients who trust us with their care.

The Australia New Zealand Head & Neck Cancer Society Annual Scientific Meeting is in town!

Some of our Adelaide Voice Therapy team, Mel, Aisling and Miriam have spent the day with speech pathologists, physios, dietitians, nurses, psychologists and oncologists discussing Prehab to Rehab for Head and Neck Cancer patients.

It was inspiring to hear from speakers covering everything from lymphoedema management, malnutrition, swallowing therapy, mucositis and manual therapy.

We’re looking forward to exploring applying what we’ve learned to help more patients in the clinic.

Another great FEES clinic today ☀️

Aisling was in her element with some complex Head and Neck Cancer patients as well as assessment for aspiration in patients with chronic lung disease and neurological changes.

We are very fortunate to have the oversight of Laryngologist Dr and the support of the Adelaide & Hills ENT team.

We also welcomed Claudia from to observe the clinic for the morning. Collaboration and teaching is key to excellent patient care.

Today is Swallowing Awareness Day!

How did you go with the quiz???

🥤 We swallow around 900 time a day - not just food but saliva as well
🥤 Over a million Australians live with a swallowing disorder, otherwise known as Dysphagia.
🥤 We produce around 1.5 Litres of saliva per day, which you will swallow often without realising

Dysphagia is the medical term for swallowing difficulties. Some people with dysphagia have problems swallowing certain foods or liquids, while others can’t swallow at all.

Signs and symptoms of dysphagia:
• takes a long time to chew
• food getting stuck in the throat
• changes in voice, including nasal or “wet” sounding quality
• difficulty chewing or controlling food in the mouth
• coughing or choking when swallowing
• changes in eating habits, e.g., eating slowly or avoiding meals altogether
• significant, unintended weight loss
• recurrent chest infections or pneumonia
• food or drink going into the nose

If you or someone you know is having difficulty swallowing, help is available.

Our speech pathologists at Adelaide Voice Therapy are highly skilled and experienced in assessing and treating adults with swallowing disorders.

We offer a comprehensive assessment of swallowing function with Fibre Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). FEES is an assessment that uses a small camera in the nose to look at the throat in real-time while you are eating and drinking. We can then make recommendations for swallowing rehabilitation or compensation.

Please get in touch with us on 08 8472 6123 or info@adelaidevoicetherapy.com.au if you or someone you care for would benefit from this assessment.

Thank you to the wonderful and for having Melissa Choong and I come and meet your lovely cohort

2025 is off to a flying start at AVT!

We’re thrilled to introduce two exciting new services to support our clients even better.

Here’s what’s new:

✨ Laryngeal Manual Therapy (LMT)
Also known as vocal massage or vocal unloading, LMT is a hands-on technique that targets the muscles of the jaw, neck, tongue, and throat. It’s ideal for tired voices, tight or sore throats, and anyone with heavy voice use.

✨ Fibre Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
FEES is an objective swallowing assessment using a small camera in the nose, allowing us to see what’s happening with your swallow in real time. This helps us provide tailored recommendations for safety and rehabilitation.

📢 Bookings are now open! Contact our clinic directly on 8472 6123 to enquire. We can’t wait to share more with you soon.
