𝗡𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵

Winter brings us the fruits of the Earth, vegetables which grow as the root and tuber of digestion nourishing plants.

Among these, sweet potato and winter squash (butternut pumpkin) are king in boosting the body’s ability to produce energy for digestion.

Taking root vegetables slow cooked, alongside pork or fish, with mung, adzuki and black beans, on a base of lightly sautéed onion and ginger is a great way to nourish the body through winter.

Using gentle, stagnation relieving herbs such as oregano, thyme, rosemary and marjoram within these slow cooked stews is a great way to prevent the digestion from cloying in response to the heavier nature of this food.

Incorporating this type of meal, and reducing fatty, fried foods, garlic consumption, raw food, alcohol and roasted or dry fried foods is an excellent start to nourishing and moistening your Earth this Winter.

𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗯𝘀

As I enter this winter period, with the simultaneous conclusion of a University Study Period to further my knowledge of Chinese Herbal Medicine, it is true that my mind is full of herbs.

Much like this shelf of various medicinal substances with confusing characters on the labels, so too my head feels a little jumbled with all this information.

Winter is a great time for this information to be sorted, consolidated and formed into something useful, in the relatively slower moving Yin period of the year.

So too, you may find yourself or your body overwhelmed with various aches, pains, digestive upsets or niggling sore throats, blocked noses and fatigue.

Winter calls upon you to nourish your body, slow down, disengage from the Yang nature of the other seasons and allow consolidation and moistening, just as the earth is consolidated and moistened outside throughout the next three months.

Doing this mindfully, with conscious intent on nourishment over the following three months, rather than overextension will aid you in preparing your Earth (Digestion) for Spring where its limits will be challenged.

Over the next three months, as I consolidate the knowledge I have collected over the past three months, I invite you to join me as I share how I attend to my inner sanctum through Winter, to ensure that the next Season is as expansive and energetic and healthful as one can hope for.

Nature has a great deal to show us about how the body works.

Take this image, with the central tree showing the manner in which the Lungs sit in the Upper Burner (Chest), up and out of the drainage ditch in the Lower Burner (Lower Abdomen).

From the Lower Burner, life arises in the form of leaves reaching up to the Sun to form energy, the gentle green colour reflecting the nature of the Liver permeating all aspects of our bodies’ function and form.

The palace of the mind (Stone Lantern Sculpture) sits next to the Lungs where it resides in the Heart, overlooking the body.

The Stone beneath the Lungs represents the Spleen, a dry place for food to be separated into clear and turbid, the clear ascending to the Lung and the turbid falling into the drainage ditch (water) to be eliminated.

Illness can be thought of as interrupting this idyllic scene, and it is the job of the Chinese Medicine Doctor to ascertain where the interruption lies, and what intervention can treat it, either by means of Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Diet modifications or Lifestyle choices.

𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗻 🧀

Of all the practitioners you’ll meet, you may never find one who promotes the benefits of cultured cheese more than I do!

The Sour flavour supports the Liver system, and moistens the bowel.

There is evidence to suggest that it lowers Low Density Lipoproteins (‘bad’ cholesterol) and elevates High Density Lipoproteins (‘good’ cholesterol).

But, is it good for you in Autumn?

In small amounts, cheese can moisten the Large Intestine and by nature of its Yin Yang Pair, the Lung which may benefit the Metal phase.

Unfortunately, due to its Sour Flavour, taking large amounts in Autumn also impairs the already suffering Wood Phase which is said to be in its ‘Dead’ or lowest tide phase in Autumn.

So, skip the cheese on the charcuterie board this Autumn, unless you’re able to just take a small amount, and not at all like this image which is filled with delicious cheese, courtesy of the Central Markets Adelaide…

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴, 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 🫁🍁

As the Lung corresponds to Metal, whose season is Autumn, one of the easiest things you can do during the Autumn months to look after your Lung is structured breathing exercises.

These can take many forms, such as the Yogic tradition of pranayama, Wim Hoff Method (minus the Ice baths please) or my favourite, Chinese Qi Gong practice which incorporates slow and deliberate breaths taken and released in conjunction with various body movements.

These practices open the Lung, improve oxygenation of the Blood and disinhibit the flow of Qi in the body.

There are many pages you can check out Qi Gong practice online, such as the wonderful

If you feel you don’t have the time to learn and practice these highly helpful and healthful methods to improve your Lung health in Autumn, the energy of this season is in simplifying your life – removing things which clutter and block a simpler routine to make time for the things which nourish your body and your soul.

Did you know that Mung Beans and Adzuki Beans (and by extension, Black Beans) are used as Chinese Herbs?

They have an affinity for the Liver and Kidneys, and are both supplementing and draining, which means they aid in the renewal of Blood and Yin, and dredge out the old, damp substances to allow the new to form.

Taking these in slow and long cooked stews with the marrow bones of Lamb or Beef can assist in rebuilding the Blood and Yin after the heat of Summer has consumed the fluids.

𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵

There are numerous pre-formulated Chinese Tonics and Formulas claiming to be able to promote weight loss, increase energy and libido, and provide additional stamina.

Under the right circumstances, some of these claims may hold true.

What these supplements are not intended to do is:
- Replace a flavour-balanced diet for your level of physical activity, stress, life stage and foundational constitution,
- Enable you to overexert yourself day in, day out for years on end,
- Replace suitable and sufficient physical activity,
- Resolve a symptom pattern which doesn’t match the formulation.

In some instances applying these supplements to override the above can at worst create ill-health and at best, form an exercise in spending money with no tangible result.

Always seek advice on herbal supplements from someone who is qualified to provide that advice.
