As your health practitioner, it is very important for me to spend time considering my perspective over this winter period.
This involves considering and examining the motivations behind why I do what I do, what I hope to achieve, and how I can best help those who seek my care.
This is not always just about the application of medicine in theory and practice, but also a recognition of the need to maintain important values when dealing with people.
These values include:
Respecting individual choice regarding treatment and encouraging self-advocacy
Providing detailed explanation about treatment protocols to ensure decisions made about care are well informed.
Providing accurate and realistic expectations about the outcomes of treatment and any anticipated pitfalls.
Returning the energy traded to the business component of my practice back into the community
I often think about the things I learn in my theoretical and practical formal training, and how this guides and informs me.
I am taking the time during this quiet season to also consider what my patients can teach me, and how I can listen more and learn more from what their experiences deliver in terms of this wonderful mystery of medicine.
