It was absolutely fantastic to receive such awesome feedback from our recent training sessions with Mind Australia
Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Training
June and July 2022
Mind Australia engaged with KGR Training for some culturally specific training for supporting Aboriginal communities with Exceptional Needs. Mind staff learnt how to assist an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence based action plan. This course is based on evidence from the expert consensus of Aboriginal mental health professionals, many of whom also have lived experience of mental health problems.
Testimonials from staff who attended the courses...
βThe Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Training was not only beneficially in expanding my knowledge of the Aboriginal culture within metro and remote areas, but also how to engage with indigenous clients on a practical level. Kel was able to share his own experiences as an Aboriginal man and also a support worker, all of his practical tips were well received. As a group, we were able to have in depth discussions about barriers and gaps we come across when working with indigenous people and then, with the knowledge gained through this course, brainstorm better ways to combat these. Throughout the course we were able to identify areas that are the same working with all people with mental health struggles but also better recognise the added differences that indigenous people face in regards to not only mental health struggles, but accessing support services and understanding their own mental health.β
βThe training provided me with an insight into cultural sensitivities that otherwise might be overlooked, practical examples and a discussion prompted by the instructor resulted in open discussion about the discrimination, prejudice, intergenerational trauma, challenges faced among many things, the importance of connection to land and country. Overall, it was an excellent training and has made me more aware about Aboriginal culture.β
"I thoroughly valued the two-day workshop with instructor Kel, focusing on 'Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid'. I entered the course with a strong empathy for the Aboriginal community but the stories and activities deepened my understanding to a whole new level. Kel utilized a firm yet gentle approach in challenging us to reflect on becoming practitioners that are proactive in contributing to a better health system for Aboriginal men, women and children. In particular, Kel was fantastic at generating discussion amongst the group that highlighted many of the barriers within our health system that impact on the quality of healthcare.β
βThis training has not only been an excellent reminder as to the professionalism and care I want to portray, but I have also been deeply touched by the significance of culture and tradition within Aboriginal community and their strong connection to land. This will remain at the forefront of my practice especially when working with Indigenous clients."
βThe Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid training assisted me as it increased my knowledge around the additional struggles that Aboriginal people have and how they are more vulnerable to having mental health illnesses. Also gained a lot of insight to the importance of connection to their land and I will apply all the knowledge I have gained to the work I do at Mind.β
