So, today’s post is about a subtype that covers a lot of territory. Sometimes conceptualised as Hypochondriasis, Illness Anxiety Disorder or Somatic Symptom Disorder, Health Anxiety OCD is often misunderstood or dismissed as a trivial problem.

In fact, OCD fears about one’s health can result in some of the most terrifying obsessions & intrusive thoughts imaginable. In fearing for our health, we are fearing for our survival. When facing obsessive rumination about illness, suffering & death, it can feel like the world has become a very dark & unsafe place. We can worry not only for ourselves but for loved ones who would be left behind if we suddenly died. Attempts to rule out the possibility that this frightening & desolate future awaits us can begin to consume nearly all of our time & attention. It can become exhausting & depressing.

As with all types of OCD, Health Anxiety OCD requires appropriate treatment, support & understanding. If you are experiencing Health Anxiety OCD & looking for a qualified & experienced therapist, please DM me 😊

With the right approach, things can get better!

Today, the focus is on ROCD. This complex subtype can be very painful and isolating, as it casts a shadow over one of our most significant human connections. Whilst the intrusive thoughts that accompany this ROCD are not typically violent, they can be extremely distressing, encompassing themes such as infidelity, abandonment and heartbreak. The OCD brain's eternal quest for certainty plays havoc with our ability to navigate the ongoing twists, turns & bumps in the road that are a natural part of any meaningful relationship. Speaking up about ROCD symptoms can be challenging, as disclosing doubts about a relationship may feel like a betrayal of one's partner. When disclosing fears of being cheated on, one might fear being labelled jealous, insecure or controlling. The potential for misunderstandings can be daunting but speaking up and seeking help can bring peace from the doubts & anxiety of ROCD.

If you're experiencing OCD symptoms with a focus on your relationship with your significant other and would like some support in managing that, please DM me. As with all OCD subtypes, therapy can help with ROCD :)

Next in our series of bite-size OCD subtype infographics, I’ve chosen to bring awareness to Paedophilia OCD. Like its cousin, Harm OCD, the nature of this theme makes it extremely challenging to talk about with family, friends or healthcare professionals. Misunderstandings, misdiagnoses & mismanagement of POCD are all very common.

In a sense, the sexual abuse of a child is like the ultimate act of harm, considered the most morally reprehensible by our society. We know that, for those who sexually abuse children, society broadly speaking has no compassion, no forgiveness & no capacity to offer them redemption. A pa******le is seen as pretty much the worst thing a person can be. Children, as victims, are the most innocent & the most vulnerable. The harm caused by sexual abuse is devastating & lifelong. So, it’s not so surprising that good old OCD will latch onto the fear that we are or could become the perpetrators of this most terrible act of harm, to those whom we are most driven to care for and protect.

The disgust, distress & self-loathing that POCD causes us to experience can be severe & requires support & understanding. If you’re experiencing POCD & are seeking help, please DM me. The right therapeutic approach, blended with knowledge & experience can end the suffering of POCD.

Experiencing this theme signifies a powerful aversion to even the thought of child sexual abuse, let alone the act itself. People whose OCD incorporates this them do not pose any threat to children whatsoever & are fully deserving of compassion, understanding, support & effective treatment. If this is you, feel free to contact me.

With the intention of raising awareness & understanding of OCD, here's the first in a series of posts exploring the different themes and subtypes of the disorder. I've chose to start with HOCD because this theme stands out in my experience, both personal and professional, as one that is widely misunderstood, misdiagnosed and mismanaged. Those of us who experience HOCD often find it difficult to talk about, even with trusted doctors and mental health professionals. Sadly, when we do find the courage to speak up, we are frequently met with a lack of understanding and a completely inappropriate reaction. It can be hard to access appropriate help for HOCD and, for this reason, I wanted to open a conversation, to create an opportunity to share experiences and information, and to shed some light on the darkness that surrounds this theme with which so many of us share a lived experience.

If you are experiencing HOCD and need help, please DM me. As I say to all of my HOCD clients, broad experience has taught me that you guys are the last people in the world who would ever actually harm anyone. Therapy can help to break the cycle of HOCD and bring relief from the distress. Reach out if you need :)

How is everyone going in the lead-up to Christmas? For a range of reasons, it’s often not the easiest time of year. I’ve been gardening to keep myself grounded through the stress. Wondering how you are all doing & hoping you’re finding some peace in the midst of all the season’s madness 😊💜
