🎉 Celebrating emerging defence industry leaders!

Congratulations to the latest cohort of graduates from the Defence Industry Leadership Program (DILP), including our very own Strategic Communications Manager, Jo Tsoukalas. 🎓

This nine-month Defence Teaming Centre program offers unrivalled industry engagement and is designed to build leadership capability across the defence sector.

Nurturing more than 400 alumni since its inception, participants gained real-world insights through hands-on workshops, industry presentations and site visits, graduating with a nationally recognised Diploma of Leadership and Management.

Project teams also took a deep dive into the future of Australia's defence sector, tackling research in critical areas to better understand the strategic challenges shaping tomorrow's defence landscape.

🤝 New partnership set to strengthen allied defence readiness.

Australian defence innovator Aurizn has partnered with US technology leader ISL to accelerate how allied forces train, test and prepare for missions across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Together, the companies aim to accelerate capability development, improve readiness and support AUKUS objectives by improving tech interoperability between US and Australian defence industries.

Last week, Defence SA's Director - Advanced System, Glen Gallagher, had the opportunity to present and moderate a panel at the Department for Education, South Australia's Defence Industries Engineering & Electrotechnology Teacher PD Day! 📚🗣

Attendees heard from ASC, BAE Systems Australia, REDARC Electronics Defence & Space, and Levett Engineering who gave briefings on the projects happening in South Australia, and the early career pathways available.

It was a fantastic chance for industry partners, training providers and educators to come together for a day focused on shaping student pathways and workforce readiness. 👏

Congratulations are in order. 👏 BAE Systems Australia has celebrated the graduation of its first Hunter class frigate program apprentices at Osborne!

This month, 22 apprentices completed their training with skills spanning steelwork, piping, electrical and detailed design trades. They join the 2,300-strong workforce building the vessels.

Doors wide open for aircraft maintenance in Adelaide ✈

Four massive hangar doors, each big enough for a Boeing 737, have been installed at the Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility in Edinburgh, completing the external structure and paving the way for internal fit-out.

On track for completion by mid-2026, the facility is set to strengthen Australia’s sovereign defence capability by supporting the RAAF's P-8A Poseidon and E-7A Wedgetail fleets and generating new highly skilled defence industry jobs.

🎉 Best of luck to the motorsport teams from Flinders University and the University of South Australia as they gear up for the 2025 Formula SAE-A Competition this week.

Both teams have recently unveiled their cars and are ready to compete at Calder Park Raceway in Victoria from 11–14 December. This event challenges students to design and build their own formula-style, open-wheeled racing cars, showcasing innovation, teamwork and engineering excellence.

🎉 Huge news! Australia's first missile assembly facility was officially opened in South Australia today to support the production of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles for the ADF.

In partnership with Defence and Lockheed Martin Australia, the site will begin production by year's end, creating 20 local jobs and hundreds more across the national supply chain.

Located at Port Wakefield, it's the only facility outside of the US able to produce GMLRS to US standards.

The milestone is set to strengthen Australia's long-range strike capability and puts South Australia at the heart of efforts to develop a sovereign missile manufacturing capability.

Organisations are invited to nominate a representative for membership in the new Defence Export Controls (DEC) Community of Practice – the DEC Exchange.

This network will bring together professionals from industry, research, academia and government to share knowledge, collaborate on best practices, and address challenges within Australia’s export control framework.

Members will:
✅ Participate in hybrid meetings three times a year
✅ Engage with experts across government, industry, and academia
✅ Help shape export controls compliance and support Australia’s national interests

📅 Applications close COB 5 December 2025. The first meeting is scheduled for 3 March 2026 in Canberra.

Did you hear the news? Saab Australia is the latest industry partner to sign on to the Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship! 🎉

Launched in 2024, the innovative program is designed to fast-track software engineering talent into South Australia’s growing defence sector by blending university study with practical workplace training.

Under the program, Saab will employ first-year software engineering students as full-time apprentices for five years.

Hosted by Charles Campbell College R-12, this exciting event sees students replicate a Formula 1 team, designing, building, and racing their own miniature F1-style cars while applying real-world engineering principles. Congratulations to Ilona Horan, Defence SA’s Director of Corporate Services and Land, on her recent promotion to Colonel and appointment as Commander of the Australian Army Cadets – South Australian Brigade.

In her new role, Ilona leads all 29 Australian Army Cadet units across South Australia, helping inspire the next generation of Defence Force leaders 🙌

As Australia’s largest youth development program, the Army Cadets fosters leadership, confidence and resilience in young Australians.

Having served with the Australian Army for over 18 years, Ilona transitioned to the Reserves in 2017 and has continued to serve our country while excelling in her role at Defence SA.

We are proud to support reservists with a long history of employing former Defence members, many of whom maintain Reserve careers alongside their civilian roles.
