🌟 NEW TEAM MEMBER- WELCOME MIKAYLA 🌟

Welcome Mikayla (aka Mik)! With both Kayla and Mikayla in the office, a nickname was definitely necessary! 😊

You may have caught a quick glimpse of Mik during our Christmas catch-up, and we are SO excited to officially welcome her to the Embrace family.

Mikayla will be working with us on Fridays and helping out on other days, including with our holiday groups!

Here are a few fun facts about Mik:
✨ She’s the president of the FUSPAA association, leading events, social activities, and general student leadership for those in the degree.
✨ Mik has traveled to Thailand, working with children with speech and language difficulties and implementing AAC, all while collaborating with interpreters.
✨ She has experience as a support worker and SSO, particularly with children with additional needs.
✨ Mik has experience in fluency, early intervention, AAC, and speech and language therapy.
✨ She’s been upskilling in GLP profiles, which is one of her keen interests!
✨ Outside of work, Mik enjoys pilates and weekend coffee catch-ups with friends. ☕️

Mik is already a superstar, and the kids have warmed to her so quickly! 🙌 We’re thrilled to have her on board with the Embrace team! 💙

🌻 What are Sunflower Lanyards?

Sunflower lanyards are specially designed to signal that an individual has hidden disabilities or additional needs. They represent positivity and hope, making them a powerful symbol of inclusivity in our community.

These lanyards are vital in providing crucial information to staff in various public settings—like airports, shopping centers, and event venues—helping them offer the appropriate support. By wearing a sunflower lanyard, individuals can communicate their needs without having to explain verbally.

Who can benefit from these lanyards? Individuals with neurodivergence, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or other hidden challenges, as well as family members and caregivers, can wear them to indicate their support role.

Wearing sunflower lanyards is a simple yet effective step toward making our world more inclusive for everyone. 🌍💚

TRY THIS …

My toddler walked over, whining a bit, as she handed me her unopened chip packet. Instinctively, I thought of asking, “Do you want me to open it?” Problem solved, right? 🤔 But I decided to try something different this time.

Instead of immediately responding, next time they raised their arms, I tried this...

I bent down to their level, making eye contact and establishing a connection first.👀

When they reached out again, I used the single word “open” in a playful, sing-song voice—a word they already knew well, drawing out the sounds. 😜🎶

And then, I waited... and kept waiting ⏰

The first few attempts went by with more whining, nothing seemed to change. But I persisted through the second, third, fourth, and fifth tries. Then...

The following week, they handed me the chip packet and confidently said, “Open.”

I delightedly opened it, giving them a big smile and picking them up with joy in my eyes. Little tweaks and consistency truly can make a difference. 😆🎉

They didn’t use their words every single time, but by creating these opportunities, I allowed them to give it a go when they were ready.

A small shift, a big reward! Patience and consistency help nurture those little victories.

🚫 5 Mistakes to Avoid When Communicating with a Gestalt Language Processor!

Understanding gestalt language processors (GLPs) is important for effective communication, it’s a little different to analytical language learning. Here are 5 common mistakes to avoid:

1️⃣ Overlooking Echolalia:Don’t dismiss repetition; it’s a vital part of their first language learning stages!

2️⃣ Using Complex Language: Stick to simple, clear phrases to enhance their understanding. What can they relate to? Do they know the meaning of the words?

3️⃣ Ignoring Processing Time: Allow them time to think before responding; patience is key! Think 10-15 seconds before prompting.

4️⃣ Neglecting Nonverbal Cues: Pay attention to their body language and gestures for deeper insights. Communication isn’t just verbal!

5️⃣ Ignoring Context:Relate language to familiar experiences for better comprehension. Do they love bluey? How many bluey phrases can you add into your conversation?

🌟 You can’t pour from an empty cup (think regulation)

Every child’s emotional and sensory “cup” is different! 🧠❤️ Some may have a full (or even over flowing!!) ☕️, with an abundance of emotions and movement, while others have an empty cup 🥤, needing more support and input. But how does this relate to SPs??? Isn’t this an OT thing?

Here’s what you might see us do to support both cup types:

Full Cup ☕️: These children have an overflow of emotions and energy. They typically need calming supports to help manage and express their feelings in a balanced way. Strategies might include mindful breathing, quiet time, or structured activities to focus their energy. There cup doesn’t take much to fill.. you can even if it as a teeny tiny tea cup! ☕️

Empty Cup 🥤: These children require more input and stimulation to engage and connect. They benefit from interactive games, sensory activities, and engaging environments that provide the necessary stimulation to fill their “cup.” These kiddos have BIG cups that take a lot longer to fill up! Think of it as a 2L frank green 🥤

This is why we work so closely with OTs for their expertise! 🤝 We also may jump into our fabulous playroom space for larger movements before or during sessions. Understanding this really helps us engage children and prioritise their needs. 💪💖

There’s a heap of different ways you can look at this analogy, but this is how we tend to view it!! Regulation is the foundation for everything else! Set your little ones up for success!!
