Caring for others has always been in my heart.
From a young age, I was introduced to the power of presence, compassion, and community.
My mother who was, a nurse in a local nursing home, would bring my siblings and I to visit residents, especially those without family on Christmas Day, Mother’s Day, or just a quiet Saturday. I would sit with them, listen to their stories, and offer a helping hand where needed. Those early memories stayed with me and became the foundation for the life I’ve chosen.
At 15, I helped to care for my terminally ill aunt who came from Malta to live with us. For a year, our home became a place of love and support in the face of great sadness. It was the first time I experienced what it meant to truly walk with somebody, and support them through to the end of their life.
Years later I became a full-time carer for my brother David. After being misdiagnosed and dismissed by the public health system, he was eventually correctly diagnosed with a brain tumour. A glioblastoma multiforme. Our family fought for answers and sought out hope where others had given up. With determination, we found Dr Charlie Teo in Sydney, who performed a life-saving operation that gave David seven more years with his family and friends.
When the tumour returned, David again faced an unimaginable decision. Despite a bleak prognosis and more barriers from the public health system, we flew back to Sydney for one final assessment. This time, there were no more miracles. David chose to come home. Surrounded by our family and friends, I had the honour of caring for him and held his hand while he took his last breath.
That experience had a profound impact on my life, and changed me forever. I would never forget the importance of compassionate support, kindness, advocacy, dignity, and hope not just in illness, but in every aspect of care.
Professionally, I bring a diverse background to this business. I’ve worked in accounting and bookkeeping, grassroots and management roles in the hospitality industry, and in both hands-on and leadership positions across aged care, disability support, home care, and retirement living. These experiences, combined with my personal journey, led me to create Life Access Ability. A service built on empathy, respect, and genuine understanding.
At Life Access Ability, we offer more than just support. We offer connection, advocacy, care and support that recognises the whole person.
Because every life deserves to be lived with dignity, and every person deserves to be treated like family.
