You’re going to want to read all the way to the bottom of this!

In March 2019, the Victorian Health Minister tasked Safer Care Victoria (SCV) to lead an independent review of the practice of spinal manipulation on children under 12 years.
SCV wished to hear from parents of children who have accessed chiropractic care, exploring their experiences, both positive and negative. The results speak for themselves:

~ 21,824 submissions in total – the largest
of any public stakeholder engagement

~ 98% said that chiropractic care helped their child, indicating improvement after treatment

~ 99.7% reported a positive experience with chiropractic care of their children

~ 99.1% indicated they were either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with information provided by the chiropractor about the benefits of treatment

~ 68.9% reported that they had also consulted with a GP about the problem

In terms of safety for chiropractic for children in Australia - there has never been a serious adverse event reported in the literature or in insurance claims. This is despite the fact that there have been an estimated 12-15 million visits by children to chiropractors in the last 20 years. The evidence of harm is low because chiropractors modify their techniques to suit the age and developmental stage of the patient across the lifespan.

A study in 2004 titled “Long term cognitive development in children with prolonged crying” was done to evaluate if colic and excessive crying (that persisted beyond 3 months) was associated with adverse cognitive development.

The study showed that excessive, uncontrolled crying that persisted beyond 3 months of age in infants without other signs of neurological damage may be a marker for cognitive deficits during childhood. It also showed that colic had no effect on cognitive development.

This post highlights that excessive, uncontrolled crying in infants needs to be examined and followed up with. With that being said - we also need to look at the literature and interpret it very carefully. Just because your baby is crying excessively - does not necessarily mean that they WILL develop the above-mentioned cognitive issues - but rather that there MAY be an increased risk associated with developing cognitive issues.

Chiropractors are highly trained professionals with years of education and clinical experience. We have spent years studying to gain a thorough understanding of the spine, nervous system, and how your body moves (among many other things).

Add on some years of diagnostics, systemic and general pathology, radiology, anatomy and physiology (yes, I have dissected a full human cadaver for a year 😳), auxiliary therapeutics, dry-needling for a year, and many more. A total of 6 years!

📚Back to school season is here and it’s the perfect time to give your spine some TLC!

Whether you’re carrying heavy backpacks, dealing with long hours at a desk, or simply looking for more flexibility and movement, chiropractic care can help you feel your best! 🌟

Let’s start the school year off right with these back-to-school posture tips!

1. Wear your back pack correctly 🎒
Use both shoulder straps and keep the load under 10-15% of your body weight to avoid straining your back

2. Sit up straight 🪑
Keep your feet flat on the ground, knees at a 90 degree angle, and your back fully supported by your chair to avoid slumping

3. Adjust your screen 💻
If you are using a device, make sure your screen is at eye level to prevent neck strain. Take breaks often!

4. Stand tall between classes 🚶‍♂️
Take short walks between classes to stretch your muscles and get your blood flowing. Avoid sitting all day!

5. Stretch it out 🤸‍♀️
Do some simple stretches before and after school to keep your spine flexible and reduce tension.
