~ Steps to avoid holiday food guilt ~

The holidays can bring up a lot of talk and feelings surrounding food guilt. Food guilt is when we feel shame, restrict, deprive and/or have bad feelings about the food we eat or want to eat. Over time, food guilt can lead to eating and emotional disorders and create an unhealthy relationship with food and sometimes exercise.

It’s important to remember that if we are living an overall healthy lifestyle and eating healthy about 80% of the time, moving our body, getting enough sleep, and managing our stress then a small treat for the holidays on several occasions won’t derail us in a big way.

It can be a lot easier said than done, so to set ourselves up here are three steps ⬇️

1️⃣ Don’t think of food and exercise as a counterbalance. We can’t undo the kilojoules (calories) we consume through exercise – in reality, it doesn’t work that way. If we stick to a consistent healthy lifestyle, then we can have a few treats and enjoy the holidays without unwanted weight gain.

2️⃣ Focus on adding instead of subtracting. What can we add to impact our health? Instead of feeling guilt about what we perceive as ‘bad’ actions, we should focus on the good things we can do each day. For example, having a piece of fruit, going for a short walk in the morning/evening (even 10 minutes), aiming to drink a bottle of water and opting for a healthy salad rather than a takeout meal.

3️⃣ When feelings of guilt start to set, make the decision to let them go. Feelings of guilt can weigh us down, leaving us feeling bad, and in many cases causing more unhealthy behaviours. Instead, enjoy that piece of cake you really want, do it without regret and then move on. It is important to not get caught up in giving up for the day by falling into the ‘all or nothing’ category. We should enjoy the treat and move with positive and healthful thoughts and actions.

Enjoy this holiday season and remember to work with your body. If you struggle with food guilt and are looking for a little extra support, DM me and let’s chat 😊

~ Healthy Starts for Families ~

One of my favourite things about our program and partnered wholefood nutritional support is our Family Health Study. Healthy Starts for Families is a wellness initiative that helps families on their quest to lead a healthy lifestyle that focuses on the Core Four: fitness, hydration, sleep and nutrition.

In this initiative, adults who play an active role in a child’s life – not just parents, but also family-friends, relatives, mentors, godparents – can co-sponsor a child aged 4-18 to receive wholefood nutrition for free for four years.

This is all about bridging the gap between what children eat and what they should be eating for their bodies to grow and thrive 🧒🏻👧🏼

Our wholefood plant-based capsules/soft chews contain no sugar or gelatine, are not classified as confectionary, are GMO free and contain vitamins A, C and E.

🍎 Our Fruit Blend contains apples, acerola cherries, mangoes, oranges, cranberries, pineapples, peaches, beet, dates, prunes and lemon peel.

🥦 Our Vegetable Blend is made up of broccoli, cabbages, tomatoes, carrots, parsley, kale, spinach, garlic, beet, lemon peel and rice brain.

After beginning the Family Health Study, parents reported the following about their children:
🏫 60% are missing fewer days of school
💊 56% are taking less over the counter prescription medications
👩🏼‍⚕️ 66% are visiting the doctor less
🍅 61% are eating more fruits and vegetables
💧 71% are drinking more water.

Our wholefood capsules/soft chews are FREE with qualifying adult orders 🙌🏼

~ Indulge without feeling guilty! ~

As part of The Healthstyle Emporium we love indulging, but we also know that it can be done in a wholesome way that still tickles our tastebuds and doesn't come at a cost to our health. So, we have created a Healthy Festive Feasts Guide for you to share delicious wholefoods treats with your family and friends! 😋

Some of my favourite recipes in this amazing guide include:
🍌 Banana & Buckwheat Pancakes
🥬 Spinach Basil & Cashew Pesto
🥔 Crunchy Smashed Roast Potatoes
🥑 Avocado & Mango Salad
🥬 Asparagus & Spinach Tart
🍫 Raw Chocolate Cheesecake

Remember, you can enjoy lots of things in moderation and there are also a number of little changes you can make that will make a big difference. For example, by choosing soda water and lime instead of sugary drinks or making ice-blocks for the kids with blended fresh fruit instead of ice-cream, or making raw chocolate treats instead of overdoing it on store brought chocolate!

Enjoy your festive season with wholefoods that will please your tastebuds and nourish your body 🥰

~ What are you grateful for? ~

Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what we receive, whether tangible or intangible. In practising gratitude, we acknowledge the goodness in our lives and usually recognise that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside ourselves – meaning we are connected to something larger than ourselves as individuals.

Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps us feel more positive emotions, relishes good experiences, assists in dealing with adversity, builds strong relationships with others and improves our health.

We can feel and express gratitude in multiple ways. Whether it be in retrieving past positive memories; being in the present and not taking good fortune for granted or in the future by maintaining a hopeful and optimistic attitude.

So, what are you grateful for right now, this minute? 🤔

For me, it’s my morning coffee which gets me started for the day, listening to an inspiring podcast whilst getting ready for work, enjoying the sunshine whilst on my beach walk and being surrounded with genuine and like-minded people who support me in levelling up to be my best self! 🙏🏼🥰

I’d love for you to share with me in the comments something you are grateful for in this moment 😊

~ Exercise myths debunked! ~

Moving our body on a regular basis has both immediate and long-term benefits, from boosting our brain health to reducing our risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Workouts don’t just help us live longer – exercise also boosts mental health and emotional wellbeing, so we can live a happier life too!

While any movement is better than none, getting the most out of exercise requires a bit of strategy. Getting off to a great start can be as simple as adopting the right mindset about exercise and, if necessary, unlearning any misconceptions standing in our way.

Here are some exercise myths I have debunked👇🏼

Myth 1️⃣: I can get my dream body if I just train hard enough.
Both weight gain and weight loss is impacted by many factors, including dietary intake, our environment and genetics. All individuals will not lose the same amount of weight on the same exercise program. Losing body fat is a complicated matter and it goes beyond a regular training program. Furthermore, regular physical activity is one of the most important factors for successful long-term weight management.

Myth 2️⃣: Strength training is only for bodybuilders.
Strength training (anaerobic exercise), has proven to be a valuable part of a fitness routine. Strength and resistance workouts benefit the heart and burn kilojoules (calories), along with strengthening our bones, joints and muscles. Strength training approximately two to four times a week, and doing a variety of exercises for the major muscle groups, will help women to achieve a lean and toned appearance.

Myth 3️⃣: Longer is better when it comes to working out.
Duration and frequency are important factors to consider in our exercise routine, but they aren’t the only components that matter. Research suggests high-intensity interval training (HIIT) consisting of shorter bouts of higher-intensity exercise can actually boost our health more than working out at a moderate pace for a longer period.

Let me know in the comments how you incorporate exercise into your lifestyle! 😊

Happy Workout Wednesday! 💪🏼

~ Make life plans or go with the flow? ~

Do you take time to sit and ponder your life? I mean REALLY set aside time to think if you are doing it right? 🤔

We all make a choice on how we are living our life. Even if it’s not an active, conscious choice, we are still choosing.

Life can feel complicated, but sometimes it involves taking a step back and adjusting and training our mindset to set ourselves some sort of plan. By stopping and making plans, it can give us a sense of purpose and allow us to create our own mission. Furthermore, having some kind of plan gives us a clearer picture of the path we want to take, emphasises what is important to us and assists us in obtaining what we wish to achieve.

Once you have your plan in mind, set yourself goals and small steps that will lead you to fulfil those goals. Believe in yourself no matter what your goal is, and never compare yourself with the people around you. Life’s not a race; everyone is at their own pace. Everyone has their own purpose and expectations, so focus on your own.

So, if you haven’t already, take the time to stop, take a breath, reflect and really think about what you are doing and what you want in life. “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” – Jim Rohn

Remember, we only live once! Wouldn’t it be a waste if we never took some risk in life to try to make something out of it?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ The more specific we are, the clearer the vision in our mind is, the greater the results we will have! 🙌🏼

What is a goal you are looking to achieve? Share with me in the comments or DM me if I can help you! 😊

~ EVOLVE or REPEAT ~

It is easy to settle and become stuck in our habits and ways of thinking. We can go days, weeks, months and even years, asking ourselves the same questions and accepting the same disheartening answers in behaviours, actions and beliefs.

The last few months have presented themselves with opportunities and experiences for me to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. Whilst chaotic at times, mentally and emotionally exhausting, I asked for these experiences and took opportunities when they presented themselves, knowing they would push me that little bit further.

I am neither a creature of comfort nor one who admits to loving doing things completely outside my comfort zone, but I always like to see how much more I can do, be and achieve.

We are always presented with two choices: to evolve or repeat. So, over the last few months I have put my all into evolving – in my thinking, my actions, my beliefs, and how I create and lead. With this, I learnt the following things:
➰Hard work and consistency works
➰Stepping outside of our comfort zone is worth it
➰Many people want the shine without the grind
➰Whether it be your health, career, a relationship, a passion project, giving your all – in terms of dedication and commitment – always pays off
➰It is not about being super talented or highly skilled – it is simply by showing up, by putting in the work and doing the extra 10% that most won’t – that you see the results and achieve what you are after
➰Surrounding ourselves with powerful like-minded people who have the audacity to live big lives in alignment with their purpose is key to doing that for ourselves.

On a few occasions I had to remind myself why I decided to move forward – going backwards to habits and situations that weren’t going to help me evolve was pointless. Being firm about my choices, values and standards was the way forward. My mantra is to be an asset to myself and those around me 🙌🏼

If you are going through a similar journey, remember to stay positive about what’s to come by being consistent with your change now.

EVOLVE or REPEAT. What will it be for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts 😊
