Understanding the Diagnostic Process for Neurodivergence
By Sage Psychology and Education | Clinical Psychology Services
Neurodivergence, including presentations such as Autism and ADHD, often goes unrecognised in adults—particularly those who have learned to mask or compensate for their differences over time. A clear and compassionate diagnostic process is essential not just for identification, but for self-understanding, validation, and access to support.
At Sage Psychology and Education, our diagnostic assessments follow a thorough, evidence-based process that includes:
🔍 Comprehensive Clinical Interview – exploring developmental history, presenting concerns, and lived experience across settings.
🧩 Standardised Cognitive and Behavioural Assessment Tools – helping us capture cognitive profiles and patterns of strengths and challenges.
👥 Input from Trusted Others (where appropriate) – providing valuable insight from partners, parents, or close friends.
🧠 Differential Diagnosis and Formulation – to ensure a clear and accurate understanding of your client’s needs.
🧾 Feedback and Recommendations – practical, strengths-based strategies and pathways for support across work, life, and relationships.
Our approach is collaborative, neuroaffirming, and trauma-informed, recognising that each individual’s journey is unique. The goal is not simply a label—but understanding, empowerment, and direction.
Whether you’re a GP, psychologist, educator, or allied health practitioner, you may be the person who helps someone finally feel seen.
If you or someone you support is seeking clarity around possible neurodivergence, we welcome referrals for both children and adults.
