Disability impacts the whole family. Many families are able to manage the changes in their lives and grow to support one another. However, families can still face challenges along the way, and if not supported, both siblings can be at risk for experiencing anxiety and depression- which in turn impacts family functioning.

Siblings, in particular, are often experiencing stresses at a time when they lack both emotional and cognitive maturity to understand and manage. The whole family needs support to manage any challenges that are present. [SOURCE: National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – child and family system interface: practice guidelines – 2019]

As such, it has been recognised that people with disabilities AND their families/carers have access to a range of well-coordinated and effective services & supports that are appropriate for their needs. [SOURCE: National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – child and family system interface: practice guidelines – 2019]
Siblings Australia have recently launched their latest support plan called; SibPlan. They provide practical tools, resources, guidance & are there to support YOU as you support your sibling. Whats better, it's absolutely FREE.

Introducing a NEW health tool for young people.

The Young Person Comprehensive Health Assessment Program (CHAP) is now available for people aged 12-18 with intellectual disability.

Access the Young Person CHAP for free on the departments website (address below).

The Young Person CHAP is user friendly. You can fill in the form on the website or print the form and write by hand, the choice is yours. It's designed to be as simple and accessible as possible.

Annual health assessments are crucial. They help identify unmet health needs in people with an intellectual disability. Your GP can then use Medicare items to support the use of this tool.

Lest we forget.

Today we honour the brave men and women who have served or are currently serving, & who have sacrificed for our country. On this ANZAC Day, we pay tribute to their courage, dedication & selflessness.

'They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them ~ The Ode.

International Guide Dog Day is an opportunity to celebrate the work of guide dogs around the world & raise awareness of the importance of guide dog services to help people who are blind or have low vision live life on their terms.

WHEREVER YOU CAN GO, THEY CAN TOO:
You can find Guide Dogs & their Handlers anywhere…

Up in the mountains. In the local shopping centre.

On a boat. In a café. In a taxi.

Wherever you can go, Guide Dogs can go too.

As long as they’re not being refused.

Even though it’s the law to let Guide Dogs travel, society often gets in their way. In fact – almost every second journey for Guide Dog Handlers results in a refusal from a taxi or rideshare. And if they can’t get a ride, they can’t get to where they need to go.

It’s time we paid more attention to the access rights of people with low vision or blindness to allow them and their Guide Dogs to keep travelling.

LEARN THE LAW:
Guide Dogs working with their Handlers have a legal right to access to any event, business, or public premises, and in Public Transport or rideshare vehicles at all times.

A person with low vision or blindness who is accompanied by a Guide Dog is permitted to:

Travel on any form of public transport, including taxis, buses, planes, rideshare vehicles, trams and trains
Enter any public place
Enter healthcare or medical suites
Visit any theatre
Eat in any restaurant
Shop in any store (including supermarkets and food stores.

For more information, visit the Guide Dogs Australia Website on: https://guidedogs.com.au/international-guide-dog-day-2024/

A Companion Card is for people with significant and permanent disability. When a cardholder buys a ticket at participating venues and activities in South Australia, their companion or carer will be given free entry.

Who can apply for a companion card?
You can apply for a Companion Card if:

You live in South Australia or you reside here under a valid visa.
You have a lifelong severe or profound disability
Due to your disability you are unable to participate at most venues and activities without significant attendant assistance care with mobility, communication, self-care and planning.
Attendant care includes significant assistance with activities where the use of aids, equipment or alternative strategies do not enable you to carry out these activities independently. It does not include your companion providing only social company or reassurance.

The Companion Card is not issued to every person who has a disability. There is a list of indicators that provides guidance about the eligibility of different disabilities. This criteria can be found at:

https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/care-and-support/disability/companion-card/apply-for-a-companion-card.

You can apply for a companion card at the above listed website; or contact our friendly Service Delivery Manager, Kelli, if you have any questions.
