Yes, during cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye, which has become cloudy due to the cataract, is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL).

Here is a simple explanation of this safe and proven procedure:

👁️ Removal of the cloudy lens: the surgeon typically uses a technique called phacoemulsification, where an ultrasound probe breaks the cloudy lens into small pieces that are gently suctioned out.
👁️ Insertion of the artificial lens (IOL): once the natural lens is removed, the IOL is implanted into the same position where the natural lens was, inside the lens capsule. The IOL is clear and designed to restore focusing power. This replacement process is essential for restoring clear vision since the natural lens plays a crucial role in focusing light onto the retina.

Dr Dev is a specialist cataract surgeon and is able to provide this expertise to referred patients at any of his places of practice. Please do not hesitate to reach out to him via his website which has all of these details, or directly.

This is an IOL. 👁️

If you are considering cataract surgery you may have heard your ophthalmologist talk about them!

IOL stands for Intraocular Lens. They are technology which is used to replace your natural lens when it becomes damaged, cloudy and dense. This new lens will allow you to see clearly once again.

There are a number of types of IOL's, and depending on your visual goals and unique eye heath and structure, and throughout your consultation, Dr Dev will advise which is best suited to you.

As an ophthalmologist with a sub-specialty in retinal treatments, disease and conditions, one of the more common procedures that Dr Dev performs is Invitreo Injections. 💉

What are these? 🤔

They are a day procedure that can be done in a clinic or a theatre setting. It involves administering medication directly into the eye to treat a number of symptoms including inflammation, bleeding or infection and is very effective.

No one likes injections and those for the eye sound particularly scary but the eye is numbed so although uncomfortable it is mostly painless and over very quickly. Recovery is rapid with little to no downtime.

If you have patients that require Invitreo Injections on a regular basis, or if you are a patient that manages their eye health with this procedure, and you would like to seek a referral to the care of Dr Dev, please do not hesitate to contact him via his website or directly at any of his places of practice (also detailed on his website).

Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. 👁️

Globally, it is estimated that approximately one-third of people with diabetes experience some form of diabetic retinopathy. The statistics are similar in Australia where estimates indicate that approximately 25-35% of Australians with diabetes have some form of diabetic retinopathy, with around 10% experiencing vision-threatening stages such as proliferative diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular edema.

Risk factors in Australia mirror those globally and include the duration of diabetes, poor blood sugar control, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels. The prevalence reflects both type 1 and type 2 diabetes populations.

Screening and early detection programs are critical and regular, comprehensive eye exams are encouraged to catch retinopathy early and prevent severe vision loss. ✔️

If you are diabetic and are seeking advice please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr Dev as he has particular expertise in this area of ophthalmology.
