I recently attended The Connected Care Conference hosted by Super Kids Behavioural Consulting. The conference was an incredibly practical, engaging, and inspiring two days. In a field that’s evolving faster than ever, it’s important to take a step back and refocus on what truly matters: ethics, compassion, and meaningful outcomes.

I had the opportunity to attend Troy Fry’s sessions on Event-Based Teaching (EBT) and Essential for Living (EFL) in Schools. His approach was grounded, highly practical, and directly applicable to everyday practice.

Honoured to have had the opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect… and to meet him in person.

Here are a few things that resonated with me… 💭📝↗️

HEY PARENTS AND CARERS! LOOKING FOR AN ABA PROVIDER AND UNSURE WHERE TO START?

Not sure who to contact, what questions to ask, or what to look for in a provider?

You play a key role in choosing the right support for your child. It’s important to feel informed, confident, and respected throughout the process. Look for providers who value your input, communicate clearly, and follow evidence-based practice tailored to your child’s needs.

If something doesn’t feel right or your perspective isn’t being heard, it may not be the right fit.

These guidelines are here to help you make informed decisions and find the right support for your family.

Drop a comment or send a message saying “ABA Provider Checklist Guide” to receive access to the full form. ☺️

Hey there!

I’m a Behaviour Analyst and Behaviour Support Practitioner based in 🇦🇺.

My work is grounded in upholding the dignity, equality, and freedoms of every individual. At the heart of what I do is a deep commitment to social justice and inclusivity, ensuring that the rights of all people, especially individuals with disabilities, are recognised, respected, and protected.

In my current role, I support families, educators, and practitioners to use positive, preventative, and evidence-based approaches across home, school, and community settings.

My key interests include applied behaviour analysis, positive behaviour support, multi-tiered systems of support, trauma-informed practice, and universal design for learning.

We often ask: “What’s the function of the behaviour?”
But here’s the shift that matters.

It’s not just about one function—it’s about the contingencies maintaining it.

Think:💭Multiple reinforcers at once💭Context-dependent💭Dynamic over time

Behaviour is rarely simple. When we broaden our lens, our interventions become more precise, more responsive, and more effective.

Behaviour isn’t a single-cause… it’s multi-determined.

During the last Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia’s 10th Annual Conference, Dr. Patrick E. McGreevy stood at the mic—emotional and grounded in why this work matters.

I was fortunate to have a brief 1:1 interaction with him over the two days.

His message stayed with me:We don’t wait for perfect speech. We don’t wait for “ready.”We create access to communication in the moment it’s needed.
Function comes before form. Always.

Understanding Behaviour Through the Iceberg Model 🧊

What we see is only the surface.

Behaviours like withdrawal, protests, or aggression are often just the tip of the iceberg—visible, but not the full story. Beneath the surface are deeper layers: emotions, unmet needs, and lived experiences.

I recently attended Gems of Research featuring Behaviour Support Specialist Jenn Colechin, who shared her perspective on navigating barriers, and where Juliet Young’s Behaviour Iceberg Model was discussed. The session highlighted the importance of assessing underlying emotional and environmental factors to inform trauma‑informed interventions and support behavioural regulation.

I’ve recreated the model and added some key reflections:

💭Behaviour is communication
💭Labels like “challenging behaviour” can limit understanding
💭Trauma (including intergenerational and the trauma of others) can influence behaviour
💭Withdrawal behaviours can be a response to overwhelm, not defiance
💭What’s underneath matters more than what we see

Instead of asking:
✖️ “Why are they behaving like this?”
Try asking:
☑️ “What might they be experiencing underneath?”

The Iceberg Model doesn’t excuse behaviour — but it helps us respond with empathy, curiosity, and support.

Let’s shift from judgement to understanding.
