Calvary Babies - North Adelaide

Calvary Babies - North Adelaide Pregnancy is an exciting time for you and your family. Calvary North Adelaide is committed to meetin

The first recorded birth at Calvary North Adelaide Hospital was in 1902, just two years after it was founded. The Maternity Ward as it is seen today was constructed in 1940 and it is from this date that the number of births in the hospital is referenced. Founded in 1885 by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, Calvary is a charitable, not-for-profit, Catholic health care organisation. Our mis

sion is to provide quality, compassionate health care to the most vulnerable, including those reaching the end of their life. With over 18,000 staff and volunteers, we have a national network of 14 Public and Private Hospitals, 72 Residential Care and Retirement Communities and 19 Community Care service centres.

Taking their Gemini star signs to the nth degree, twins Sophia and Alexia arrived in late May, before being joined by Asher and Elijah a few days later. Roman and Mason then joined the twin party in the Special Care Nursery, and soon, this sweet sextet will become an octet, as another set will be joining them over the weekend!

Midwives including Sophie, Amy and Vanessa are delighted to help care for these cutie pies, who were all born under the watchful eyes of Obstetrician Dr Cassie Staehr and Paediatrician Dr Anthony Chitti.

Thank you to all the recent graduates who came to the Application Information Night for the Calvary 2026 Graduate Nurse/Midwife Transition Program – it was lovely to meet so many enthusiastic and motivated new nurses!

The clinical teams from across our three hospitals enjoyed speaking about their speciality areas, and our Learning and Development team were impressed with the great questions asked during the Q&A sessions. The L&D team had done a magnificent job putting the whole night together, and with the support of the hospital executives and business development team, the overwhelming feedback was that it was a very worthwhile event to have attended.

Applications are now open!

Yesterday, volunteers from across our three SA hospitals came together to celebrate with a shared morning tea.

Executive staff and managers also attended the event, expressing our collective gratitude to our 200+ volunteers - the heart and soul of Calvary!

In her acting Regional CEO role, Toni-Ann addressed the group “Volunteering is more than showing up; it's about bringing heart, empathy and kindness to make a difference. Every day you embody these qualities, whether it's through a comforting smile, a listening ear or working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. Your selfless efforts support Calvary to thrive, and your kindness and commitment creates a lasting impact that resonates far beyond the hospital walls. We simply couldn't do it without you!”

Integral to passing on knowledge and experience to future generations, are women in many roles - including mothers, aunties, friends, midwives. Today we acknowledge and celebrate all women who teach, support, guide and encourage us.

You may recognise these two individuals who pass on knowledge and love to those in our care:

Mim is our Parent Educator; she runs pre-natal classes for new parents as well as the grandparent refresher sessions. For both of these groups, Mims brings her knowledge and first-hand experience from her own family life as well as many years as a midwife and educator. She was recently by the side of daughter Steph, as she welcomed baby Zahlia to the family.

Volunteer Jenny lends a hand each week in the Maternity Unit, including at the Parent Morning teas. She had been a midwife with us for more than 21 years, and together with fellow midwife-now-volunteer Chris, loved the role so much that she continues to support the midwives and new mothers since retirement.

To all the special women who have a strong influence in our lives; we thank you for supporting us and sharing your wisdom. We wish you all a wonderful Sunday.

A lovely celebration today, thanking our team for all they do on this year’s International Midwives Day.

An afternoon tea was enjoyed, and each team member received a little love-heart shaped keyring to remind them of the difference that they make in the lives of those they care for.

It will be a busy week for the team as they helped welcome a set of twins today, with another two sets due in the coming days – just in time for Mother’s Day!

You can meet our Maternity Unit Manager, Vanessa and hear more about her role and why she became a midwife here: https://www.calvarycare.org.au/news-and-events/news/meet-the-midwife-at-calvary-north-adelaide-hospital

Today we celebrate the extraordinary midwives of Calvary!

To those who are on our team today, and to those who have cared for generations of South Australians (more than 83,000 Calvary babies in fact), we sincerely thank you for all that you have done for our smallest patients and their families.

We will soon share some fun photos of the team as they mark the day, but in the spirit of celebrating 125 years of Calvary in SA, we have selected some images of midwives in our special care nursery across the decades to start off the day.

Some things have certainly changed over the years, but the expert medical support and genuine care we provide remain the same.

On a side note - We’d love to hear from you if you know the O’Connor triplets (Paul, Anthony and David) born in 1941, or if you'd like to share your own Calvary Babies memories. Please get in touch via https://ow.ly/Y8oX50Vuhq3

An interesting article was written about how their mother was faring six months on – a fascinating insight.

Safe sleeping practices are an important part of our pre- and post-natal education. These sessions are run by midwives for expectant and new parents, as well as a refresher for grandparents in their own dedicated class.

Included is practical tips and up to date information, along with some hands on practice.

To celebrate Safe Sleeping Week, one of our graduate midwives Shannon, demonstrates some of these tips along with her beautiful assistant, baby Olivia.

For all babies 0-12 months, Red Nose Australia recommends six key steps to reduce the risk of sudden infant death.

1) Always place baby on their back to sleep
2) Keep baby’s face and head uncovered
3) Keep baby smoke free, before and after birth
4) Safe sleeping environment, night and day
5) Sleep baby in their own safe sleep space in the same room as their parent or caregiver for at least the first 6 months
6) Breastfeed baby

More information can be found on the Red Nose website: www.rednose.org.au/section/safe-sleeping
