estara We’re South Australia’s peak body for spinal cord injury and a registered NDIS provider and charity.

Since 1963, we’ve been supporting people living with spinal cord injury and other disability to live independently, safely and with choice. PQSA is the foremost community spinal cord injury body in South Australia, providing invaluable services to people with SCI and other disabilities. Established in 1963, the organization began as a volunteer-run advocacy group for those who required wheelchairs

for mobility. As demand grew, PQSA expanded its reach across six locations in South Australia, including major regional centres, and was rebranded as PQSA in 2014. Today, the organization boasts a team of passionate and dedicated staff and volunteers who work together to enable everyone to participate fully in the community. PQSA has established itself as a subject matter expert in the SCI community, with strong ties to SA Health, allowing the organization to optimize health outcomes and treatment pathways. As a benevolent organization and registered NDIS provider, PQSA provides top-tier peer support, specialist spinal nursing, and occupational therapy services that have become best-practice models across health, rehabilitation, and community disability networks. PQSA is well-known for its commitment to removing barriers to participation and supporting the broader disability community through funding accessibility and inclusion initiatives. HomeCare+, PQSA's in-home care service, is a leading provider of services to people living with disabilities, across a range of physical, intellectual, and developmental conditions. The organization is committed to providing quality services and safeguarding its clients. At PQSA, the principles of person-centred care and individualised support are at the forefront of everything the organization does. Emphasizing a team approach with the client as the key team member, PQSA offers genuine, supported, and exciting job and career growth opportunities. For those seeking to empower those with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities to live their potential, PQSA is the ideal place to start.

We're not sure if you saw in the news this week but on Sunday night someone deliberately flooded Penny Place apartments in the city: https://www.9news.com.au/national/adelaide-apartment-complex-flooded-police-investigation/10b37e27-e30f-43ad-8af9-0e6bda0bac27

What you might not know is that these apartments include the homes of quite a few people who live with a disability. With electricity off, water everywhere and in the darkness of night, residents had to be quickly evacuated via the stairs with no lifts available for their wheelchairs.

Our team quickly swung into action. Late yesterday, we got the first of our clients out of hospital and into their own place through a huge effort and collaboration between our Support Coordinators, our OT/ Special Disability Support team and operations staff working tirelessly with partners at SA Health, NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme, Liverty Housing , Community Support Incorporated and Wila-innovations.

The team has pulled out all stops coordinated by Teresa (estara Support Coordinator). Kat from Liverty decked out a new apartment in record time and with such care. Rob and Shaylin our estara OTs retrieved and repaired bits of equipment and sourced new parts as residents not only had to leave all their personal belongings behind but also critical equipment like power wheelchairs, hoists and other supports that are now stuck in the building.

The commitment to getting our clients back into a space of their own with the supports they need in such a short time has been amazing to see. Shout out especially to Rob, Teresa , Shaylin Vogel, Lloyd, Kat, Russell and Wayne and everyone else for all your work over the last couple of days - and of course to the residents themselves who have been so patient through this whole experience 👏
