estara We’re South Australia’s peak body for spinal cord injury and a registered NDIS provider and charity.

Since 1963, we’ve been supporting people living with spinal cord injury and other disability to live independently, safely and with choice. PQSA is the foremost community spinal cord injury body in South Australia, providing invaluable services to people with SCI and other disabilities. Established in 1963, the organization began as a volunteer-run advocacy group for those who required wheelchairs for mobility. As demand grew, PQSA expanded its reach across six locations in South Australia, including major regional centres, and was rebranded as PQSA in 2014. Today, the organization boasts a team of passionate and dedicated staff and volunteers who work together to enable everyone to participate fully in the community. PQSA has established itself as a subject matter expert in the SCI community, with strong ties to SA Health, allowing the organization to optimize health outcomes and treatment pathways. As a benevolent organization and registered NDIS provider, PQSA provides top-tier peer support, specialist spinal nursing, and occupational therapy services that have become best-practice models across health, rehabilitation, and community disability networks. PQSA is well-known for its commitment to removing barriers to participation and supporting the broader disability community through funding accessibility and inclusion initiatives. HomeCare+, PQSA's in-home care service, is a leading provider of services to people living with disabilities, across a range of physical, intellectual, and developmental conditions. The organization is committed to providing quality services and safeguarding its clients. At PQSA, the principles of person-centred care and individualised support are at the forefront of everything the organization does. Emphasizing a team approach with the client as the key team member, PQSA offers genuine, supported, and exciting job and career growth opportunities. For those seeking to empower those with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities to live their potential, PQSA is the ideal place to start.

We love sharing stories from our Specialist Disability Support team, this one comes from Rob, our Senior Occupational Therapist.

Karl has recently experienced changes to his mobility and has been relying on his wife, Helen, for support with most day-to-day movement. Wanting to take steps toward regaining independence, Karl came to estara's SDS team for support.

Karl attended our clinic to commence prescription of a 'head array' control - a specialised control system for a powered wheelchair that allows a person to drive and operate the wheelchair using small head movements, instead of their hands. While there is a bit of a journey to go, this is the first step to restoring Karl's independence with mobility.

At estara, we’re committed to helping people with spinal cord injury live more independently - because you matter.

This week, we pause to reflect on the legacy and impact of spinal cord injury advocacy in South Australia, a journey we’ve been proud to lead for more than 60 years.

From our beginnings in 1963 as The Paraplegic Association, through our growth as PQSA, to today as estara, one thing has never changed: our commitment to standing alongside people with SCI.

For over six decades, we’ve championed advocacy, independence, and specialised support, and today, as estara, we continue to build on this proud history as the peak body for spinal cord injury in South Australia.

Together, during SCI Awareness Week, we honour the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future of creating stronger, more inclusive communities.
