Did you know women are generally more flexible than men? Our muscles and tendons allow us more mobility due to having a higher concentration of a protein called ‘elastin’.

Have you had a knee arthroscopy?
This keyhole surgery is used to treat problems with the knee joint, and it can take a long time to recover from. Walking may be difficult and you will experience a certain amount of pain.

We can help with your rehab. We will show you exercises to strengthen your knee, and design a physiotherapy programme tailored to you so that you can get back on your feet as soon as possible.

It’s been a tough year, and the post-festive slump of January can get us all down even at the best of times.

While we haven’t been able to see loved ones as much as we might like, it’s no surprise that a lot of people are feeling rather low right now.

Get on the phone or a video call to your friends and family - not only will it cheer you up, it might give them a much needed lift too! Check in on the people you care about and let’s all take care of each other.

Remember there is plenty of help out there if you are struggling to cope, so reach out to your doctor or local mental health service if life feels overwhelming. There’s no shame in getting support - it’s the most empowering thing you can do 🙌🏼

For your shoulder to move through its full range of motion, it needs to be stable. Try this great shoulder stability exercise:

1. Stand facing a wall with your arm straight out in front of you at shoulder height
2. Place a basketball or gym ball between the palm of your hand and the wall
3. Lean into the ball keeping your arm straight and press it against the wall
4. Slowly move your arm up as high as possible without losing contact between the ball and your palm
5. Return to the centre and repeat. You can also move in other directions (down, left, right and in circles)

With the kids going back to school soon, it’s a good time to think about healthy habits for the new year that will benefit the whole family.

Could you start walking to school together? Maybe you’ll start making healthy lunches and snacks together in the evenings ready for the next day. Can you find time for fresh air and exercise as a family at the end of the day?

Getting your kids into a healthy routine now will set them up for life - and it won’t do you any harm either!

What healthy habits will you be introducing in 2021? ☀

Do you take care of your oesophagus?
It’s probably not an area you think much about, but if you develop issues there then you’ll soon be painfully aware of it! No one wants difficulty swallowing, heartburn, reflux or the potential chest pain that can follow.

Here are a few things you can do to take care of your oesophagus:

- Reduce your alcohol, caffeine and sugar intake
- If you smoke, try to quit
- If you take medication in pill form, make sure you do so with plenty of water
- Avoid lying down or bending over soon after eating

What’s the difference between tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow?

Both involve inflammation of the tendons that attach to the elbow, and are caused by repetitive motion of the arms and wrist.

Tennis elbow affects the outside of the elbow and forearm, whereas golfer’s elbow affects the inner side.

If you have pain in your elbow though, you probably don’t care which one it is - you just want it fixed! So give us a call and let’s get you back to your activity of choice, whatever that might be! 🎾⛳

The word of the month for January is Ecchymosis. That’s a bruise to you and I!

Ecchymosis doesn’t only occur as a result of trauma though, like the common bruise we know well. It’s a discoloration of the skin caused by bleeding underneath. So, it can also be the result of burst blood vessels, certain medications that thin the blood, and some diseases that affect the blood.

It’s usually nothing to worry about, but if you have frequent bruising with no obvious cause then you should speak to a doctor to be on the safe side.

What’s the biggest bruise you’ve had? Tell us below (and the story behind how you got it)!

Right, it’s exercise time!

Lunges develop your lower body strength and increase your endurance by working the hips, glutes, quads, hamstrings, and core, as well as the hard-to-reach muscles of your inner thighs. Here’s a handy cheat sheet for your lunges:

1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
2. Take a big step forward with your right leg so that your heel hits the ground first.
3. Lower your body until your right thigh is parallel to the floor, keeping your right shin straight. The goal is to create 2 x 90-degree angles with your knees.
4. Push your right heel down into the floor and straighten both legs to return to your starting position.
5. Repeat 10 - 15 times.
6. Repeat steps 1 - 5 on the other side.
