People ask us this all the time. Unfortunately, it’s another one of those questions where the answer is, ‘It depends’.

Most people feel some positive impact in a few days. While the IV infusion gets iron into your bloodstream quickly, your body still needs time to access it from your blood and put it to work. Gradually, you’ll get increased production of immune cells and antibodies, plus more ability to handle inflammation. All that will lead to increased feelings of wellbeing.

Our team are always there to answer questions or support you through the process. That level of care is one reason our injectable nutrients clinic is still thriving after all these years.

Most of the iron infusions we administer take around an hour. But we ask patients to allow a little more time. That means we can monitor you not just during the infusion, but in the time directly after it. We want to be doubly safe and sure you don’t have any reaction.

And since we know you’re going to be in there for a while, we’ve made our IV injectable nutrients clinic as pleasant as possible. Lots of light, comfortable chairs, something to read, friendly staff. We know there’s other things you’d rather be doing with your time – you’re here getting your IV iron so you’re well enough to do all the things you want to! – but you still deserve to be looked after.

Iron supplements are freely available, so why would you need to have iron injected directly into your blood?

From our 14 years of experience with IV iron, here are some really good reasons:

1. Iron supplements aren’t working because you can’t absorb the iron from the gut to the blood
2. Iron supplements aren’t an option because you can’t tolerate them
3. You need to raise your iron levels FAST, in preparation for surgery, or if you’re late in pregnancy or you want to avoid a blood transfusion
4. You have chronic kidney disease or heart failure and need more iron than your body can process for you

Our experienced team can administer IV iron in a bright and friendly facility where you will be looked after and carefully monitored. It’s a medical procedure, but we aim to make it as pleasant as possible

At PIM, we admire and are constantly impressed by the power of the human body to recover and look after itself – as long as you give it the nutrients it needs.

But surgery is a major event, outside what our body was designed for. If you’ve had surgery, or you’re about to have surgery, your body may need extra supplies of nutrients like zinc, copper, manganese and selenium.

You can get these either via supplements or via personally tailored injectable nutrient therapy. Both are available via PIM.

The best option for you depends on your specific circumstances, and we’ll always consult with you and make recommendations based on your history and your recent tests.

It depends!

It depends on your genetics. Some people have genetic mutations which make it difficult to absorb specific nutrients.

It depends on the health of your gut. A bout of gastro can affect nutrient absorption. So can ongoing conditions like coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease and IBS.

Injecting nutrients directly into the blood stream eliminates issues with how your gut absorbs them. It can be especially effective if you need to raise nutrient levels quickly. Supplements are easier, but take longer to absorb.

Our injectable nutrient clinic has been operating in Adelaide for over 14 years, providing support and relief for many with different digestive issues. We treat each person individually – we consult and check your health before recommending a tailored treatment for you – but we never change our commitment to high quality ingredients, clinical hygiene and careful monitoring to look after everyone who trusts us with their health.

People with coeliac disease who eat wheat and other gluten-containing foods can damage the lining of the gut. Villi, the tiny fingers of cells which absorb nutrients from food, become damaged or may even disappear.

The problem is, you may not know you have coeliac disease until the damage is done. That leaves you with less ability to absorb the nutrients you need – even if you stop eating gluten the moment you find out you have an issue!

One solution is injectable nutrients. Another is supplements. The goal is to give your body everything it needs to repair itself.

Just one of the conditions we see in patients which can lead to nutrient deficiencies. Just one reason we might recommend injectable nutrients to get your body back on track.

Amazingly, these groups ALL have higher than average risk of anaemia.

If you’re in one of these groups and you’re fatigued all the time, or can’t concentrate, or look pale, you may have iron-deficiency anaemia.

Most people can fix this with oral supplements. Some may have difficulties absorbing iron, in which case they’ll need an iron infusion. Whichever group you fall into, PIM can help. Once we’re sure that’s the problem, of course! We always check your health history and recent test to be sure of the diagnosis before we decide on treatment.

Sometimes, your body can’t absorb all the nutrients you need efficiently. If it’s short-term – say a gastro bug – that doesn’t matter too much. You’ll recover quickly. But if your intestine is damaged longer term, this can be more of a problem.

Injectable nutrients and / or supplements can help you get the nutrients you need while the intestine recovers. One option is to use an IV infusion to get nutrients into the bloodstream quickly, then maintain levels via supplements. Or you may need more infusions during recovery.

The best treatment for you depends on what’s happening in your body. That’s why we make sure we understand your health history and have up-to-date tests before we recommend treatment.

Sometimes, even if you take iron supplements, your body struggles to absorb the iron into your bloodstream. That could be for one of several reasons:

* Mutations in the TMPRSS6 gene causing IRIDA (iron-refractory iron deficiency anaemia)
* Coeliac disease, which can affect your ability to absorb all kinds of micronutrients
* Stomach surgery, which may also affect how your stomach functions

If iron supplements don’t work for you, iron infusion may be your best option.

Treatment at the PIM Injectable Nutrients Clinic takes around an hour, in a light, airy, comfortable environment, treated and monitored by our experienced team.

In medicine, as in life generally, the answers are often more complicated than the questions!

Is vitamin C safe?

Usually, but not for everyone. If you have kidney disease (renal failure) or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD), or certain other disorders, there can be risks. One reason we always take a full medical history and perform tests before any infusions.

It’s also important to consider potential interactions with other treatments. Another reason we always take a full medical history before starting any treatment, as well as monitoring clients during and after treatment.

We assess a whole range of treatment options for each person individually, and we won’t recommend intravenous vitamin C unless we believe it’s a good option for you. But we will explain our reasoning and work with you to look after your health.

That statistic comes from the Victorian Government, and it’s sobering.

What’s the impact if you’re one of the 5% who have anaemia?

- Fatigue and lack of energy
- Reduced muscle strength
- Potential impact on mental health
- Your liver may function less effectively

If you’re exhausted keeping up with day-to-day tasks – or if you’re not keeping up at all! – it might be time to test your iron levels.

Fix low iron levels via changes in diet, supplements or iron infusion.

Some people struggle absorbing iron, for genetic or other reasons. Some people need to raise iron levels more quickly than supplements allow. In these cases, iron infusion (IV iron) is the only answer.

PIM offers iron infusion through our injectable nutrients clinic, which has been operating for over 14 years. Trained staff, exemplary hygiene, pleasant surroundings and monitoring throughout the process – we do all we can to make this a comfortable and easy experience.

Our clinical staff use a range of criteria, including medical history and test results, to assess eligibility for iron infusion.

Doctor Tim’s seen first-hand that medications don’t always work for everyone.

Sometimes, standard treatments don’t deliver the results you’d like. Symptoms persist. Life doesn’t get better.

Something about you and your body is a little different from usual. Not wrong, just different. That means you need a different approach.

We ask two questions:

Why isn’t this working for you?

What can we suggest for you instead?

To answer these questions, we focus on the root cause (or causes – there may be more than one) of your symptoms. Depending on your history, we may investigate food intolerances, genetics, your gut microbiome or more. The aim is always to dig deep and find out about you as an individual, so we can treat you as an individual.

Iron is for power and strength! It produces haemoglobin to carry oxygen around your body. It prevents anaemia, which can lead to debilitating fatigue. It supports your immune system.

You probably know it’s important for menstruating women, who lose a lot of iron every month. Did you know it also supports brain development in children and adolescents?

Some people don’t have enough iron in their diet. A small percentage of the population have genetic issues which affect their ability to absorb iron from food or from supplements.

Injectable nutrients can help. We can raise the iron levels in your blood more quickly via IV drip than by supplements or dietary changes. If you can’t absorb iron, this may be the only way to ensure you get the iron you need.

IV iron is available via Medicare if recent blood tests show deficiency. If you have borderline results or are at risk of ongoing iron loss, you can also be considered for iron replacement therapy.

Our clinic has been running for 14 years. We create personalised nutrient blends for each individual patient, based on what we learn about you and your body from clinical assessment and pathology tests.

You probably know there’s more than one B-vitamin, but did you know there are 8 in total?

Here’s the list:

thiamin (B1)
Helps convert glucose into energy and is important for nerve function

riboflavin (B2)
For better vision and healthier skin

niacin (B3)
Essential to convert carbs, fats and alcohol into energy, plus it’s important for skin and digestion

pantothenic acid (B5)
Helps metabolise your food and assists in producing red blood cells

pyridoxine (B6)
For your metabolism, your red blood cells, your brain and your entire immune system

biotin (B7)
To support your metabolism

folate (B9)
Often included in supplements as ‘folic acid’, it is vital to form red blood cells and plays a major role in foetal development. Many people have trouble metabolising this most common form, so may need folinic acid or methyl folate instead.

cobalamin (B12)
Important for the nervous system, red blood cells and mental ability. It also helps folate (B9) to work better. As with B9, there is a more active form, methyl-cobalamin, which is more easily metabolised.

Almost every part of your body needs some part of the vitamin B complex – but most of these vitamins break down easily and can’t be stored by the body.

At PIM, we may recommend changes to your diet to ensure you’re getting enough of these vitamins, or we may suggest injectable nutrients to lift the levels in your blood more rapidly.

If you’re feeling sluggish, consider booking a consultation. Nutrient deficiency is just one of the potential causes we investigate.

ELISA stands for ‘enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay’.

That’s a mouthful, but what does it mean?

Short answer:

We test your blood to see what foods your body reacts negatively to. In other words, we identify food intolerances.

Longer answer:

When you have an ELISA test, your blood is analysed for immunoglobulin G or A (IgG or IgA) antibodies. Your body creates these antibodies in response to specific proteins, which come from different foods.

Since each protein triggers a different antibody, we can use the ELISA test to identify which proteins your body is reacting to. We can relate those proteins back to different food sources.

The ELISA test can measure reactions to over 200 different foods. This insight into what your body can or cannot tolerate is a great first step to help us understand why your body reacts how it does, and what we can do to change that.

‘You are what you eat.’

There’s a lot of truth in this oft-repeated line, even if reality isn’t quite that simple.

A healthy, balanced diet is one factor that can really help with your health, both physical and mental.

But what exactly is a healthy, balanced diet?

There isn’t one answer for everyone. What if your body needs something a little bit different from the norm? You might have allergies, or food intolerances, or difficulty absorbing nutrients.

At PIM, we take the time to understand you and your body, so we can work out what nutrition you need. We work out the right diet for you.

So you can stop eating to survive and start eating to thrive.

Your body has an amazing capacity to look after itself, to heal itself. But you need to:

GIVE it what it needs to do that

REMOVE the toxins which stop it working effectively

That’s the core philosophy behind the Professional Integrative Medicine Approach.

The challenge lies in working out exactly what your body needs and what it never wants to deal with again. We spend time and effort trying to understand your unique body, so we can personalise that for each and every patient. It’s one reason we recommend such a wide range of tests. Whether we confirm a condition or prove that you haven’t got it, we’re learning more about you and your body. So we can treat you better.

A magic metal, where small quantities can make a big difference.

Zinc boosts your immune system, promotes tissue repair to heal wounds faster, regulates hormones and supports brain function, including memory. It’s a great antioxidant too!

It’s not the only nutrient you need, but it is an important one. We often add it to the customised mixes we supply to clients at our injectable nutrient clinic. And of course it’s something we consider when looking at how nutrition, meal planning or supplements can help you on your journey to better health.

Every person is different. Every body has different nutrient needs. We always check out you, your body and what might help you specifically before recommending any treatment plan.

If your body needs some extra care, understanding and nourishment, we recommend an initial consultation to confirm root causes of any issues so we can offer the right treatment from the start.
