Today, the world’s attention turns to World Sight Day 👁️ – a global initiative dedicated to eye care awareness and equitable access.

This year’s theme, 💚 encourages everyone to prioritise their eye health — at home, at work, and in everyday life.

Protecting your vision can be as simple as:

〰️ Taking regular screen breaks by following the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
〰️ Wearing sunglasses and a hat for UV protection
〰️ Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3s, vitamins, and minerals to help slow macular degeneration and diabetes-related vision loss
〰️ Quitting smoking
〰️ Wearing safety glasses in hazardous environments
〰️ Scheduling routine eye checks every two years, or more often if you’re at risk

Our hospital is proud to support better eye health by providing high-quality ophthalmic care to our local community.

Take time to love your eyes this World Sight Day 💙. Book an eye test 👓 if your vision has changed, and encourage others to do the same.

September Is International Pain Awareness Month

Chronic pain affects more than 1 in 5 adults worldwide and is often under-recognised and undertreated. Barriers such as cost, geography and low awareness can make best practice care hard to access, sometimes leading to over-reliance on medication.

At Nexus Hospitals, we’re fortunate to partner with pain specialists across six of our hospitals nationwide. Together we deliver evidence-based treatments and coordinated care pathways, working with GPs, physiotherapists and allied health to tailor care for each patient.

Thank you to our pain specialists and to the teams in pre-admissions, theatres, recovery and bookings whose expertise and compassion make this care possible every day.

Earlier this year, Nexus Hospitals nurses and Ophthalmologists joined Australian Health Humanitarian Aid (AHHA) on their annual mission to Cambodia, delivering vital medical, dental, and eye care to communities in need.

This year’s impact was extraordinary:
⭐️ 930 medical health checks
⭐️ 498 eye surgeries
⭐️ 1,764 dental treatments
⭐️ 1,700 humanitarian parcels delivered

Many patients travelled up to eight hours to Phnom Penh’s Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, where the team partnered with the Khmer Sight Foundation. AHHA also provided meals and essentials to support families during their stay.

Representing Nexus from Manningham Private Hospital were Dr Troy Lim-Joon, Dr Kevin Foo, Dr Lance Liu and Dr Michael Shiu along with Dr Benjamin Au from Windsor Private Hospital. Supporting our VMO's were nurses Celia Stekelenburg and Monet Hooper from Manningham Private Hospital, and Emi Callaway Izawa from Windsor Private Hospital working tirelessly to restore sight and transform lives.

👏 A huge thank you to everyone involved. This mission is a powerful reminder of what compassion and expertise can achieve across borders, and in the lives of those who need it most.

🧡 World Patient Safety Day – Teamwork in Action

Today is World Patient Safety Day, and at our hospital we’re highlighting the importance of surgical safety through the power of teamwork.

A key part of this is Team Time Out – a brief pause before surgery where the team confirms the patient’s identity, the procedure, and the surgical site. This critical step which forms part of the World Health Organisation’s Surgical Safety Checklist enhances communication, prevents errors, and keeps patient safety front of mind.

This July marked the fifth year of Time Out audits across our hospital network, and it was our biggest and best yet! Every one of our 22 hospitals participated, with 462 doctors audited by Nexus Hospitals nursing champions – the highest level of engagement to date – further strengthening the compliance and collaboration across our theatres.

A huge thank you to our doctors and employees who made this year such a success, and our Chief Medical Officer Anthony Chambers for leading this important initiative. Patient safety starts with our teams around the table and together we’re making every check count.

💛 Today is R U OK? Day 💛

Caring for people is at the heart of everything we do not just for our patients, but for each other.

R U OK? Day is an important reminder to check in with the people around us. A simple, genuine “Are you okay?” can open the door to a conversation that makes all the difference.

In healthcare, we’re often busy giving our best to others, and it’s easy to miss the small signs that a colleague or friend might be struggling. You don’t need to have all the answers - just being present, listening without judgment, and encouraging support can truly help.

We encourage everyone today, and every day, to:
✔️ Check in with someone you care about
✔️ Listen with empathy
✔️ Encourage seeking help when needed
✔️ Take time to look after your own wellbeing too

Our hospital is committed to building a culture of kindness, compassion, and connection. Thank you to our incredible team for all that you do not just today, but every day.

Let's keep the conversations going. 💛

🦷 It’s National Dental Health Week! 🪥

This week, we’re proud to support the outstanding work of our dental surgeons across our national hospital network who care for patients with expertise and compassion.

Dental Health Week is a timely reminder of the small, consistent habits that help maintain healthy teeth and gums, especially for our youngest patients. This year’s focus is on reinforcing the importance of building lifelong habits from an early age.

The core principles of excellent oral hygiene remain simple but powerful:
1.🪥 Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
2. 🧵 Clean between teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes
3. 🥦 Eat a nutritious, low-sugar diet
4. 🦷 Visit your dentist regularly

By supporting prevention and education, our dental teams play a vital role in promoting lifelong oral health.
