Many people dread the winter time not only due to the cold, dark and short days, but due to increasing joint stiffness & pain that occurs during the cold weather 🥶

As we age and for people diagnosed with Arthritis, it becomes more common to experience joint stiffness and pain in the colder weather. Some people also note their symptoms to worsen as there is a change in weather!

Cooler temperatures cause the fluid within our joints, called Synovial Fluid, to become thicker which creates joint stiffness leading to reduced joint range of motion and flexibility. Pain is often as result of the lack of movement at these joints and also due to friction within the joint on movement

Common body areas that people experience stiffness and discomfort includes, the hands, knees, hips and lower back

To reduce joint stiffness and improve overall comfort and activity during the winter time, we recommend following the tips above!
Keeping your body moving with the aid of extra layers of clothing or warm modalities such as a hot shower or heat pack can significantly improve your comfort and overall quality of life during winter time 😀

Tweaked your ankle?

POLICE your acute injuries for quicker recovery and return to activities! These simple steps can help to reduce the risk of aggravating the injury, reduce pain, and improve recovery.

Do look out for "Red Flags" that might indicate serious injuries (e.g. fractures, dislocations) that warrant immediate medical attention.

To prevent recurrent ankle sprains, don't forget to strengthen up your ankles as the pain subsides. If you experience trouble returning to sport, our Tweak Physios would be happy to assist you on your recovery journey!

Do you experience pain on the outside of your knee when running?

If so, you may be experiencing a condition called Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome 😟

ITB syndrome is a painful condition where the outer aspect of the knee becomes inflamed due to repeated rubbing of the ITB on the knee.

This often occurs when increasing your running load or intensity and is in most cases due to weakness and tightness at the glutes and legs. Running biomechanics and footwear can also play a role in the onset of ITB syndrome. 

The good news is that early physio intervention has been shown to be key in assisting a quick return to running and sport 🏃‍♀️

Whilst most of us consider arch support with running shoes, it is often not something thought about with cycling shoes. Adding to this, cycling shoes unfortunately usually have very poor arch support which can lead to ni**les, aches and pains 😢
