Joint mobilisation is the skilled passive movement of articulating surfaces of a joint to help produce a reduction in pain or an increase in range of motion. Joint mobilisation can be done manually utilising a practitioner's hands or with a belt to create greater leverage with less force from the therapist. It can be used in any condition causing joint pain, tightness and limitation of movement. Some clinical presentations may include anterior hip impingement, frozen shoulder, nerve impingement (radiculopathy) or to help joint health with those struggling with osteoarthritis.

Use of joint mobilisations during a treatment can help with:
1. Decreasing joint pain
2. Increase joint range of motion
3. improve joint congruency
4. reflexively decrease surrounding muscle tension

It doesn’t take long to settle into new surroundings when you’re accompanied by legends!

Apologies I have been quiet on here . I have been settling and trying to sit back into keeping things simple and doing what I love best which is one on one treatment with clients.

A few weeks ago we stayed back to refined our skills in the application of dry needling. I’ll be honest it’s been so nice to have some fellow therapist to share experience & knowledge with and to learn from others in different ways.

Also me volunteering to be on the table so I can get a sneaky treatment and eat snacks at the same time šŸ˜‚

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation combines the use of dry needling whilst also applying an electrical current to produce a contraction within a muscle.

The technique is extremely useful to help improve muscle strength or re-educate weak muscles, decrease tension within the musculoskeletal system and help maintain or improve joint range of motion following orthopaedic surgery. It is an extremely effective modality that can improve pain symptoms, increase circulation and improve sensory recovery due to nerve compression. As well as being extremely useful in decreasing muscle spasticity in patients that have suffered from stroke, cerebral palsy or MS.

During my clinical practise this is a modality that I have grown to love as some of the results that have been achieved have been outstanding! In clinic some of the most common presentation that I may use NMES for are:

- Nerve entrapment (Sciatica in Particular)
- Over-use injuries presenting with tightness within the musculoskeletal system.
- Retrain muscle weakness or atrophy post surgery.

If you would like more information on NMES or want to know if it appropriate for you please reach out.

Patella Femoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)

Do you get pain in you knee when walking up and down stairs, or when performing a deep squat or lunge?

Or maybe you have discomfort in your knee after sitting down for a long period of time?

If you're wondering why this may be happening it could be caused by PFPS which can occur with overuse of the knee hip and quadricep muscles. It can also be caused by a sudden change (generally increase) in physical activity, which can be related to the frequency of activity (e.g., increasing the number of days you exercise each week) or to the duration or intensity of activity (e.g., running longer distances).

Muscular imbalances weakness or tightness in muscles can often be part of the cause. Sometimes just doing some activation of your medial quadricep muscle and gluts is enough to help reduce pain! Although this is not always the case manual therapy, massage, cupping and dry needling are all great conservative treatment options to help manage pain occurring at the knee.

If you're looking for some extra help with knee pain or discomfort with the above symptoms pop on in and have a chat about how manual therapy can effectively help those with patella femoral pain syndrome.

CLINIC UPDATE!

"Its time to start something new and trust the magic of new beginning"

As many of you may have noticed there has been a few changes in my clinical hours.
I just wanted to say thank-you for all of your patience as I have taken a much needed break after working full time for a number of years. Over the last few months I realised that I had almost fallen out of love with my trade after pushing so hard to try and make a small business work for many years. I didn't realise I was in a state of burn out until I was deep in it and it was also mixed with feelings of failure as I thought stepping back meant that I didn't achieve what I thought I would. I have learnt over the past few months that its ok change direction and that goals can change. For me a change in direction will open up many more successful pathways into the future.

Im excited to announce that I will be moving location as of the 1st of June to Bayside Sports and Health. I'm very excited to start a new chapter and get to know all the wonderful team members that I will know be working along side. I'm also looking forward to taking a slight step back from running a full time business and focusing on what truely lights up my soul and that is treating patients and being a great practitioner. Over the past few years I feel the strain of trying to run my own business has not aloud me to put in 100% to my trade!

This is also bittersweet as I leave an incredible team and friendships that I have built over the years at Bayside Physiotherapy over the past 10 years. I will miss being a part of this community and it took me a long time for me to feel comfortable in making the decision to leave because I value each and every person I have been lucky enough to get to know.

My Clinical hours at Bayside Sports & Health will be:

Monday (9:30 - 2:30pm)
Wednesday (9:30-5:00pm)
Thursday (9:30-1:00pm)
Friday (9:30am-5:00pm)

Online bookings will be open shortly (keep watching this space) and I look forward to continuing to help many of your on your wellness journey!
