Week 3-ANZSN/ANZDATA Advanced Trainee Research Project Program

This program targets trainees in their first and second years of training who wish to undertake a project using an ANZDATA dataset, with priority enrolment for trainees from centres without established statistical support. The trainees are supported by the ANZSN/ANZDATA Epidemiology Fellow (2025 - Dr Dana Forcey). Every week for the next five weeks, we will feature a new trainee and their project: This week is Rabab Al Lawati:

My name is Rabab Al Lawati and I am in my first year of training in Renal medicine at Waikato Hospital in New Zealand. I applied to the ATRP program in order to develop my statistical and research skills. My topic is looking at pregnancy outcomes in living kidney donors post nephrectomy, supervised by Dr Lai Wan Chan. There is a lack of data on this topic in New Zealand, which has a very unique and multicultural population, hence international data may not be applicable. Researching this topic is therefore vital for ensuring that our young female donors are well informed of the potential risks; findings may help increase our donor pool. This topic piqued my interest as it encompassed two of my big interests which are women's health and Transplant medicine.

First and second-year Nephrology Advanced trainees interested in the program are encouraged to liaise with a local supervisor to formulate a project idea for submission. Expressions of Interest for the ATRP Program will open in early 2026. Trainees wishing to discussion applications or project ideas can reach contact the Epidemiology Fellow at: dana2@anzdata.org.au

Week 2-ANZSN/ANZDATA Advanced Trainee Research Project Program

This program targets trainees in their first and second years of training who wish to undertake a project using an ANZDATA dataset, with priority enrolment for trainees from centres without established statistical support. The trainees are supported by the ANZSN/ANZDATA Epidemiology Fellow (2025 - Dr Dana Forcey). Every week for the next five weeks, we will feature a new trainee and their project: This week is Sharafuddin Shah Bin Rhasbudin Shah:

My name is Sharafuddin Shah Bin Rhasbudin Shah, currently based in Hamilton, New Zealand and in my second year of Renal Advanced Training. I am undertaking a research project under the supervision of Dr Kannaiyan Rabindranath, focusing on predictors of home-based dialysis versus centre-based dialysis in patients who commenced dialysis via haemodialysis catheters. I joined this program to strengthen my understanding of biostatistics and statistical analysis. My goal is to become proficient and independent in performing statistical analyses for my current project, as well as future research endeavours. Developing these skills is essential for producing high-quality research and contributing meaningfully to the field of Nephrology.

The trainees are supported by the ANZSN/ANZDATA Epidemiology Fellow (2025 - Dr Dana Forcey). Every week for the next five weeks, we will feature a new trainee and their project: This week is Kate Brotherton:

My name is Kate Brotherton, I am a 2nd year trainee at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. My project, supervised by A/Prof Pedro Franca Gois, is to undertake a 20-year retrospective analysis to explore withdrawal patterns for patients receiving peritoneal dialysis. We hope that our project will give insight into peritoneal dialysis withdrawal predictors for clinicians. With an interest in public health, access to healthcare and patient advocacy, this project is an opportunity for me to explore a new aspect of our patient’s kidney disease journey. As a trainee with limited experience applying statistics, the ATRP program initially appealed to me for assistance with research statistics. After commencing the program, I have realised that it is an opportunity for much more than that. With the support of the Epi Fellow, we are following the research project through every step, from constructing meaningful and achievable proposals, data requests, literature searches, navigating statistical software and applying the statistics. Additionally, it is an opportunity to collaborate with others working on registry studies which is an excellent opportunity to see other perspectives and be supported through the successes and turmoils that research brings

This National NAIDOC Week, The Medical Journal of Australia has published our latest paper “Am I on the list?” in their 2025 Special Issue on Indigenous Health.
We’ve known for a long time that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are far less likely to receive a kidney transplant. Using national data, we break down the reasons why First Nations patients are less likely to be waitlisted and why the system needs urgent reform.

Transplantation equity requires a prioritised investment in system and quality improvements, from enhanced referral and assessment pathways to optimising all elements of care and ongoing accountability measures

Have you ever been on dialysis — or are you on dialysis now?

Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) is working on a national research study to find out which patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are most important and useful to people with kidney disease. PROMs are simple questionnaires that ask about your health, how you’re feeling, and how treatments like dialysis impact your quality of life.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Australia and New Zealand Organ Replacement Therapies Registry Group (ANZORRG)

Since 1977, ANZDATA has been synonymous with improving the quality of care and outcomes for people receiving dialysis or kidney transplantation in Australia and New Zealand. Over the years, the role of operations support has grown to include a range of organ replacement Registries, each dedicated to advancing clinical care through improving the quality of care and outcomes for people requiring organ replacement therapy. These Registries are supported by a team with diverse expertise, who ensure data is collected, analysed and reported in a timely and professional manner.
To reflect this broader and evolving portfolio, we are proud to introduce ANZORGG: The Australia and New Zealand Organ Replacement Therapies Registry Group, a name that represents our roots while embracing the full spectrum of our work.
Under the continued leadership of Stephen McDonald, Phil Clayton and Georgina Irish, the people and operations remain unchanged. From an organisational perspective, this identity allows us to better represent the operational group that supports a variety of programs including:
• Australia & New Zealand Dialysis & Transplant Registry (ANZDATA)
• Australia & New Zealand Organ Donation Registry (ANZOD)
• Australia & New Zealand Living Kidney Donation Registry (ANZLKD)
• Australia & New Zealand Eye & Tissue Donation Registry (ANZETD)
• Australia & New Zealand Lung Transplant Registry (ANZLUNG)
• Australia & New Zealand Heart Transplant Registry (ANZHTR)
Importantly, we do not anticipate any changes to the operations or identities of individual Registries. We are grateful for your ongoing support of our registries.
