🦠 Do you know what to do with your unused antimicrobials such as antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals?

Unused antimicrobials should be returned to your local pharmacy for safe and free disposal.

Disposing of unused antimicrobials inappropriately, such as in the bin or down the sink or toilet, can harm the environment and pollute waterways, contributing to antimicrobial resistance.

To help reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistance, it’s also important to:
▪ Only use antimicrobials when you need them
▪ Never use old antimicrobials for a new infection
▪ Never share your antimicrobials
▪ Use antimicrobials as prescribed
▪ Dispose of unused antimicrobials correctly by returning to a pharmacy

What is Australia Day?
January 26th marks the day in 1788 that Captain Arthur Phillips arrived at Sydney Cove and raised the Union Jack, beginning the British colony.

It is described as a day to reflect on what it means to be Australian, to celebrate contemporary Australia and to acknowledge Australian history.

It is a national public holiday across Australia.

Why is Australia Day controversial?
Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people see Australia Day as a day for sorrow and mourning, with some referring to it as Survival Day, and viewing it as an inappropriate celebration of the invasion by British settlers. These people had been living on the continent we now know as Australia for more than 60,000 years, and at least 1600 generations had lived and died there. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people now take this opportunity to celebrate the survival of their people and culture.

In recent years, Australia Day has promoted a focus on reconciliation and recognition of the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to Australia.

When was Australia Day established?
January 26th was first observed as a holiday in 1838, originally limited to the territory of New South Wales. However, representatives from Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and New Zealand joined NSW leaders in Sydney to celebrate the Centenary in 1888. It then became known as Anniversary Day or Foundation Day.

It wasn't until 1994 that January 26th became known officially as Australia Day.

[UPDATED ADVICE – TUESDAY 4 JANUARY 2022]

In South Australia a ‘close contact’ is defined as:
▪ a household member or intimate partner of a COVID-19 case during their infectious period
▪ someone who has had close personal interaction with a COVID-19 case during their infectious period
▪ someone who has been notified by SA Health that they are a close contact
▪ someone who has been to an exposure site during the exposure period for that site.

Close personal interaction with a COVID-19 case is an interaction:
▪ for 15 minutes or more AND
▪ where masks are not worn AND
▪ in close physical proximity AND
▪ in an indoor setting

COVID-19 cases are considered infectious two days before their symptoms started. If they didn’t have any noticeable symptoms, they are considered infectious two days before they had their positive COVID-19 test taken. The infectious period ends 10 days after they had their positive test taken.

If someone you have been in close contact with tells you they have tested positive to COVID-19, please follow the advice below.

Close contacts are required to:
▪ immediately quarantine for 7 days since you last saw them
▪get a COVID-19 PCR test immediately
▪get a COVID-19 PCR test again on day 6 after exposure (a negative day 6 PCR test is required to be released from quarantine)
▪ get a PCR test again immediately if symptoms develop
▪not attend high risk settings or COVID Management Plan events for 14 days after exposure
▪wear a surgical mask when around others
▪avoid contact with vulnerable people (young children, elderly, pregnant, people with chronic health conditions), avoid non-essential activities, avoid working across worksites and avoid shared spaces and maintain physical distancing on days 8 to 14 after exposure.

Do not attend an Emergency Department, unless it is an emergency.
