Join us to celebrate the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology! This free public lecture honours the legacy of Claire Corani and is presented by the Australian Institute of Physics' 2025 Women in Physics Lecturer, Dr Sol. H Jacobsen. Her talk, Your Quantum Future, will discuss the quantum property of spin and show how our understanding of this property is changing the way we build devices.

Title: Your Quantum Future
Presenter: Dr Sol. H Jacobsen
Date and time: Monday 11th August 2025, 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Location: Horace Lamb Lecture Theatre, North Terrace Campus, University of Adelaide
Registration: https://events.humanitix.com/2025-claire-corani-memorial-public-lecture-as-part-of-the-marie-curie-lecture-series

Abstract:
The humble electron is a pillar of modern technology. They power almost every aspect of daily life, from your toaster to your phone. But these devices use only one quantum property of the electrons: their charge. Today, physicists are harnessing other properties – such as their “spin” – to advance a new technological revolution. This talk will show you how our understanding of spin is changing the way we build devices, from basic principles to state of the art. Your quantum future is coming – learn how, why, and what society should do to prepare.

Last Wednesday, Professor Susan Coppersmith from the University of New South Wales gave a very interesting talk on the world of theoretical physics. She walked us through the basics of quantum mechanics and provided fascinating insights on the role of theoretical physicists in furthering our understanding of the fundamental elements that make up our world.

Additionally, we also presented the Claire Corani Memorial Prize to Sepideh Behameen this year. Congratulations!

Sharing the world of physics last weekend at Science Alive!

We had a blast last weekend running hands-on activities for over 700 Science Alive! attendees to learn about physics in a fun and exciting way. These activities included transmitting music through lasers inside a “laser playpen” where participants were challenged to direct the laser around obstacles. We also demonstrated absorption and how we perceive colours using jellies and lasers.

A huge thank you to Lijesh Thomas and Optofab Adelaide for all the 3D printing assistance! Another big thank you to Kate and Tegan from the South Australian Science Teachers Association team for the invitation to be part of Science Alive again! And a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the booth possible. Sharing physics with people of all ages is incredibly important and we hope to have inspired some future physicists!

Date and time: Wednesday 14 August at 6:30pm

Location: Horace Lamb Lecture Theatre, Horace Lamb Building, The University of Adelaide (North Terrace campus)

Come along to this year’s Claire Corani Memorial free public lecture to hear from Professor Susan Coppersmith from the University of New South Wales! She will be presenting about how physics gets done and what it’s like to be a physicist through her talk on “What Do Theoretical Physicists Do?”.

The physics focus of this talk is quantum mechanics, which says that every subatomic particle has both particle-like and wave-like properties. She will outline the back-and-forth between the theory and experiment that is critical to progress, as well as the process of becoming a physicists and what a career in physics looks like.
