Over the break I have been struggling with some issues with one of my feet - my right big toe to be exact (in case you were wondering ;)).
This has made me reflect a lot on my relationship with my body as it ages and changes. What it has meant is that I have had to change my plans for lots of dance practice and instead I have been seeing a physio to get therapy and advice about how to manage this new issue.
It is inevitable as we age that our bodies will change. As the physio said to me just this morning "keep doing your walking and yoga until the pain eases as our bodies are made to move (yay) but they are also made to degenerate (no so yay) just take a break from dancing while you can".
So I have decided to use this break to rest and heal my toe and focus on what I CAN do not what I CANNOT do. There is still alot I can do I just have to adjust my expectations.
Where does yoga come into all this?" you may be thinking. Well it plays a big part for me. Firstly it allows me to feel strong, subtle and mobile in all areas of my body. Because I practice Slow, Mindful Yoga I can make very wise decisions about how to adapt my practice to care for my current issue. Most importantly though, the practice helps me to cultivate peace with my body and watch the messages I give to myself and also may feel from outside sources.
If you'd also like to experience a practice each week where you can improve how you feel and function physically as well as how you feel about this amazing body of yours then please come and join us in Term 2 commencing next week.
