“People with disabilities ♿ and their carers 🤝 have long had to advocate for equitable access to health care. Despite progress, significant barriers still exist in obtaining diagnoses and treatment for routine health conditions. When it comes to palliative care, these challenges become even more complex. ”

To address the challenges disability service providers face in accessing palliative care, the Victorian Statewide Palliative Care Advisory Group was formed. Their practice insights document for Yooralla outlines key barriers and enablers to delivering quality palliative care for people with disabilities.

In this blog, Karen Kessner—Project Officer for Aged Care and Disability Strategy at the North and West Metropolitan Region Palliative Care Consortium—shares the group’s findings, priorities, and reflections on improving equity in palliative care. ⚖️

At the Ageing Australia National Conference, Professor Jennifer Tieman represented on a panel discussing the challenges of implementing palliative care in aged care.

Facilitated by Liz Behjat (Ageing Australia), the panel brought together leaders from across the sector, including Josh Fear (Palliative Care Australia), Karen Conte (Dovida Australia ), and Verity Leith (Benetas).

💡 The panel explored barriers such as limited awareness, staff training needs, systemic barriers like resources allocation, communication gaps and cultural and social factors—and highlighted the importance of integrated care models to better support residents, families and staff.

👏 Thank you to all panellists for sharing their insights and leadership in shaping the future of palliative care in aged care.

💜 Paediatric Palliative Care: Key Considerations for Nurses

Paediatric palliative care is a unique and often challenging area of palliative care. This small group of children and young people have a wide and diverse range of conditions, some of which may be rare, and some of which may have a clinical course which runs over many years.

Key considerations:
🔹 There is tremendous variation in the state of readiness for transition to palliative care
🔹 Developmental factors influence all aspects of a child’s care including his/her understanding of illness and death, ability to communicate and participate in decision-making, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drugs
🔹 Families and siblings need ongoing support 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
🔹 The impact of illness — and loss — changes family life forever💔

“When someone dies in the community, 🚑 paramedics are often the first healthcare professionals to arrive. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Family members are commonly present during these events and look to paramedics for comfort and support throughout this challenging time. How paramedics respond in these moments can make a big difference to family experiences and emotional wellbeing. ”

In this blog, Eillish Satchell, Registered Nurse and PhD Candidate at the University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau, examines the vital role paramedics play in supporting grieving families. She highlights how current paramedic guidelines and training often lack sufficient detail in this area, and reflects on where we go from here. 💛
