🌿 Exam Season — Supporting Your Teen Through the Stress 📖

It’s that time of year again — exam season has come around faster than most students and parents expected.

For some, this feels like the most important time of their school life — years of effort coming down to these few weeks. For others, there’s a quiet sense of relief that school will soon be over — not everyone has enjoyed this journey, and that’s okay too.

Whatever their experience, this time of year can bring heightened stress, worry, and self-doubt. Teens may struggle with sleep, focus, or motivation, and emotions can feel bigger than usual. It’s often a challenging time for parents as well — trying to offer support, manage tension at home, and balance their own responsibilities.

Patience, empathy, and reassurance go a long way. Remind your teen that their worth isn’t defined by results and that it’s okay to take a breather. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just be there — a calm, steady presence in what feels like a whirlwind.

You start each week with good intentions — thinking this will be the week you finally get on top of things. But somehow, the to-do list just grows. You’re managing people who don’t get along, supporting those struggling with stress or mental health, and trying to keep everyone happy — all while keeping your household, business or team running.

You’re tired — constantly. Spare time feels like a luxury, and when it does appear, you end up using it for someone else. Health, fitness, or your own wellbeing cross your mind while scrolling social media, but that’s usually as far as it goes.

Reiki isn’t tied to any religion or belief system. It’s a gentle, energy-based practice that supports balance and renewal — working with your body’s natural energy and always guided by the intention of what’s best for you.

I still remember my first day of my new role in Melbourne (over 10 years ago).

My boss picked me up from the airport, dropped me off at the office and said, “Go introduce yourself to everyone and learn their roles.”

No introductions. No handover. Just awkward smiles all round.

That experience stuck with me — a reminder that leadership isn’t about authority, it’s about communication, connection, clarity, and trust.

Let’s make checking in on each other part of our everyday routine.

Why I do what I do!

I’ve been the Manager holding it all together — team, family, deadlines, everything. For years I flew to Melbourne & Perth every week for a Corporate FIFO role.

None of us are exempt from feeling heavy at times — life brings challenges we can’t always see. That’s why it’s so important we’re there for one another, because not every struggle is visible. 💛

Quite often when we talk about mental health, we talk about it when we’re not travelling well. Mental health is not just about the tough times – it’s about building meaningful connections throughout life’s pivotal moments.

Whether it’s checking in with a friend who isn’t behaving how they typically do, offering support during life changes, or creating space for honest conversations, these connections are the foundation of good mental health.

Throughout October, Mental Health Coalition of South Australia is hosting a range of events to encourage communities to talk more openly about mental health, and help people find the resources they need.
