The Specialist Gap Check

This week I walked through how Google has quietly stopped grading individual pages. It grades your whole business now — and it makes one decision about you. Specialist, or generic.

The thing that tips that verdict is coverage. How many distinct services does your practice visibly cover, across both your Google Business Profile and your website?

This weekend's challenge is simply to count.

No judgement. No fixing anything yet. Just an honest look at where you currently stand.

How to:

1 Open your GBP and your website side by side. Same as last week's Mirror Check — GBP in one tab, website in another.
2 Count the services on your GBP. Every distinct service showing. Quit smoking, anxiety, confidence, sleep — whatever's there. Just the number.
3 Count the dedicated service pages on your website. Not your homepage. Not your about or contact page. Just the pages where you describe a specific service. Count them.
4 Notice the gap. The specialist benchmark for a local hypnotherapy practice in 2026 is around thirty services, comprehensively mirrored across both your GBP and your website. Wherever your numbers land, that's your honest starting point.
5 Post in the comments — use the template below.

The Specialist Gap Template
"When I counted my services and pages, I found ____ services on my GBP and ____ pages on my website. The gap to thirty is ____ — bigger than I expected / roughly what I thought / smaller than I thought."

Examples:

Smaller practice: "When I counted my services and pages, I found 5 services on my GBP and 3 pages on my website. The gap to thirty is bigger than I expected — I didn't realise how far generic the algorithms would read that as."

Mid-range: "When I counted my services and pages, I found 9 services on my GBP and 6 pages on my website. The gap to thirty is roughly what I thought — I'd been meaning to build out more pages for a while."

More established: "When I counted my services and pages, I found 12 services on my GBP and 8 pages on my website. The gap to thirty is smaller than I thought but still significant."

Small action. Honest number. Done before Sunday lunch.

The Google Business Profile & Website Mirror Check

This week we talked about mirroring — the idea that your Google Business Profile and your website need to be telling Google the same story. That consistency is what gets you found.

So this weekend, your challenge is simple.

Open your GBP and your website side by side and check three things.

Just three. That’s it.

The Matching Rules — In Plain English

Before you start, here’s how to read your results:

✅ Match — The service name on your GBP and the page name on your website are identical or close enough that any person would immediately recognise them as the same thing. Google is happy.

⚠️ Close — The words are related but different enough that Google may not confidently connect them. Worth tidying up.

❌ No Match / Missing — The service exists on one but not the other, or the language is so different they could be describing entirely different things. This is costing you visibility.

How to:

1 Open both at the same time — Your Google Business Profile in one tab, your website in another. You’re going to look at them together, possibly for the first time.

2 List your GBP services — Write down every service showing on your GBP. Quit smoking, anxiety, confidence, sleep — whatever is there.

3 For each GBP service, find the matching website page — Does a dedicated page exist? What is the page name / main heading? What is the URL?

4 Check the three columns — Does the page exist? Does the page name match? Does the URL contain the service name?

5 Post in the comments — Tell us what you discovered. More matches than expected? More gaps? Either answer is useful.
