Water, water everywhere - but, are you drinking enough?

Studies show that many of us live in a constant state of dehydration. Since our body is 55-60% water, rehydrating is extremely important.

If you are finding it hard to drink more water, try these 4 easy tips:

1) Whenever you feel a hunger pang, begin with a nice fresh glass of water.
2) Aim to drink 1L of water before lunch, drinking in small sips. Avoid gulping down a full glass at a time.
3) Start the day rehydrating with a fresh glass of water. This can help flush out toxins and keep bowels regular.
4) Add a small slice or two of fresh fruit to a jug of water and allow it to infuse for 20 minutes. This provides some extra taste without the sugar overload.

With 5 days left until Christmas, I would like to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year!

Healthy desserts anyone?

Two of my favourite healthy desserts for occasional treats are:

1) Apple Crumble minus the flour on the crust. Make it from almond meal and rolled oats, and bind together with butter and cinnamon for a great tasting dessert. Don't forget to stew the apples in water and serve with a dollop of yoghurt.

2) Full fat Greek yogurt with blueberries and nut butter.

Enough to satisfy any sweet tooth. Yummy!

5 Worst Carbs for Inflammation and Pain:

1) Donuts and pastries - refined flour together with super-sweet glazes, icings & jam fillings, all boost inflammation throughout the body.
2) Sweets and lollies - concentrated sources of sugar have an immediate impact on blood sugar. This causes a short term energy boost, but is usually followed by a blood sugar drop, feelings of tiredness and even sleepiness for some.
3) Muffins and bagels - may look more healthy than donuts, but they also contain refined processed flour and sugars, and can have the same impact on blood sugar levels and insulin.
4) Sugar-sweetened soft drinks, iced drinks (chocolate milk or iced coffee) and fruit juices - soft drinks, iced drinks & packaged fruit juices are sweetened with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) and artificial sweeteners, which wreak havoc on insulin and blood sugar.
5) Packaged snack foods - if the snack food has 5 or more ingredients, especially ones you can't pronounce, it's safe to assume they are not healthy! They probably contain refined flours, added sugars, artificial colours and chemical additives.
