Is Your Pillow Helping or Hurting?
Most people don’t think much about their pillow until they wake up with a stiff neck, a headache or another restless night.
But here is the truth: Your pillow can play a significant role in what your spine is doing for 6–8 hours every night and, for some people, it is quietly part of the problem.
So how do you know if your pillow is right for you? Here are a few simple questions to consider:
1. How do you feel when you wake up? If you are regularly waking with neck stiffness, tight shoulders or headaches, your pillow may not be supporting you well.
2. Does your pillow still hold its shape? If it is flat, lumpy or collapses under your head, it is no longer doing its job.
3. Do you toss and turn to get comfortable? This can be a sign your body is trying to find support that your pillow isn’t providing.
4. How old is your pillow? Most pillows lose their support long before people replace them.
What most people do not realise…
It is not really about finding a “soft” or “firm” pillow.
It is about whether your pillow keeps your neck and spine in a good position while you sleep.
• Too low → your head drops, placing strain on your neck
• Too high → your neck is pushed forward or sideways
• Not supportive → your muscles work all night instead of resting
Over time, this can contribute to poor sleep, tension and ongoing discomfort.
The goal is simple: A pillow that suits your body, your sleep position and your spine.
The right support at night can make a big difference to how you feel during the day.
