Celebrating 50 Years of NAIDOC

This year’s theme: The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy highlights the vital role educators and school leaders play in empowering young people and shaping strong, connected communities every day.

Find a range of inspiring resources that are available for download for your classroom.

ANNOUNCEMENT: NAIDOC Week Education Resources now available!

ABC Education is pleased to once again partner with the National NAIDOC Committee to create the official NAIDOC Week education resources.

Today, educators around Australia have access to the official educational resources for this year’s NAIDOC Week theme: The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy on the ABC Education website.

The resources, written by educators from Culture is Life and overseen by Co-Chair, National NAIDOC Committee, Prof. Lynette Riley, AO, guide educators on how to meaningfully introduce the stories and themes to students and their school communities. This year’s educational resource feature powerful stories written by First Nations peoples celebrating ‘the legacy of ancestors, the strength of young leaders, and the vision of communities.’

The resources can be found on the NAIDOC and ABC Education websites and are designed for Levels F-10 in line with the Australian Curriculum. They aim to inspire teachers, students, and younger generations to learn, connect with and celebrate this rich and diverse history and the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

"In 2025, we celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC Week, celebrating our cultures and teaching about our people’s histories and cultures. Each year, we select a theme to further develop greater understanding of our issues, in line with our Elders’ initial concepts for NAIDOC Week. The theme for 2025, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy,’ focuses on our youth – future leaders in Culture, and all the social and political parameters we need their ongoing help with as we continue to fight for justice and equity in Australia. We want to highlight the amazing role our youth play in our futures. They are our strength, they provide our vision through their ongoing work with Elders in their own communities and they are responsible for future legacies." - Co-Chair National NAIDOC Committee Aunty (Prof) Lynette Riley AO (Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi)

"Culture is Life is extraordinarily proud of the education and social impact work we create. The resources produced by our educators are anchored in pride and a passion to share the stories, dreams and aspirations of First Nations peoples from across this nation. The shared commitment of our educators is to ensure the next generation of Australians are more informed and aware of what our strengths, vision and legacies have been and continue to be. Capturing the breadth of contributions, talents and aspirations is a challenge. However, the invitation to join this work to build awareness is evident in these resources. NAIDOC Week’s 50th anniversary is an invitation to participate and build upon the materials, the stories and the voices of generations. We look forward to these stories being taught and learnt from for generations to come." - CEO, Culture is Life Belinda Duarte (Wotjobaluk and Dja Dja Wurrung)

"First Nations Australians love to celebrate who we are and where we've come from. It allows us the chance to acknowledge our deep connection to Country, to each other and to our shared future. This year, the NAIDOC theme ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy’ calls for everyone to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements and experiences, including those young leaders emerging in our communities. We welcome you to join us on this journey and celebrate our place in this country together." - ABC Head of Indigenous Kelrick Martin: (Ngarluma)

"The ABC is pleased to partner with the National NAIDOC Committee in creating these education resources. Education plays a powerful role in shaping understanding and respect. We’re proud to support teachers in bringing the stories, histories, and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples into classrooms across the country." - ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks.

We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Carolyn Grantskalns who was recently awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Many in the South Australian education sector will know Carolyn through one of her many roles and of course, as the Presiding Member of the Teachers Registration Board.

Carolyn is a former teacher and Wilderness School Principal of 16 years and was appointed AISSA’s CEO in 2013, only recently retiring from that role in 2023.

Carolyn also served on the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority Board and is a former member of the South Australian Education Standards Board.

Congratulations Carolyn on this outstanding and well-deserved recognition of your hard work and dedication to education in South Australia.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Anthony (Tony) Houey, a long-term TRB deputy board member.

Tony was appointed as a deputy member in August 2012 and served as a dedicated member of the Board for many years. He was a passionate advocate for the role of law in education in South Australia and made a lasting impact through his work in student debating.

Generous with his time and always willing to share his expertise, Tony was a valued resource for many.

Tony officially retired and resigned from the Board on 30 May 2016, but his contribution and presence have left a lasting legacy.

We extend our condolences to Tony’s family and acknowledge his important contribution to the Teachers Registration Board.

As we mark National Reconciliation Week 2025, we reflect on this year’s powerful theme: Bridging Now to Next.

It’s a call to action for all Australians to honour the lessons of the past while stepping forward together into a more united future.

This theme reminds us that reconciliation is a shared journey - one that requires courage, reflection, and commitment from us all.

Bree Buttenshaw is a proud Kalkadoon woman and talented digital artist based on Quandamooka Country. She is the artist behind this year’s National Reconciliation Week artwork.

When describing her artwork for , Bree says, ‘The artwork celebrates the resilience of Australia’s native flora, featuring Lemon Myrtle, Banksia, Gum Leaves, Desert Lime and Kangaroo Paw, renowned for their ability to endure harsh conditions, regenerate after fire, and flourish through adversity. These plants embody the strength and adaptability of people and communities, emphasising the importance of growth in the present while looking toward the future.

Vibrant patterns symbolising journeys and tracks reflect resilience, connection, and progress, serving as a reminder of our deep ties to Country and the paths paved by those before us. The squares and rectangular shapes that spiral into each other can be viewed as spiraling inwards or outwards depending on where you are in your journey.

By interweaving the regenerative stories of native plants with the campaign’s theme, the artwork encapsulates perseverance, unity, and hope. The colour palette is inspired by the Aboriginal flag and fire.’
