What do you think of INTERMITTENT FASTING for fat loss?
Here are excerpts of a professional's comment:
IF is not bad..
The first thing your body breaks down to fuel it is carbs you ingest. After that is depleted, it looks for glucose in your body...that is known as glycogen. That is abundantly stored in fat tissue. So, the more of that tissue we carry, the more we burn it. Only when a body is low in fat tissue, will your body start to burn through protein...or muscle. So, for certain body types, one could say that fasting might generate results.
Now, the flipside of this is that without proper protein intake, your body cannot build muscle. As your workout, you create micro tears in the muscles. These tears healing are what creates muscles. So, when you see people get muscular, it is because they are damaging their body and the result of that healing is the size you see when you look at them. So, I do not think it is bad, but I would say that you should be cautious. I would not recommend an outright fast. I would suggest the following.....calculate your bmr and your caloric needs for the day. Calculate your macros as well. Plan your evening meal to include your caloric and macro needs. Remember, losing weight means that you take that number you calculate and reduce it, by say, 300 calories per day so you can start to see results. If you factor in exercise, the deficit will be greater, but do not push past reducing it any more than 500 calories per day. Throughout the day, rather than fasting, give yourself some small sources of protein. Maybe some turkey chunks. Some high protein legumes. Something that is protein laden and sugar light....as your body burns sugar and if you give it sugar, it will not burn it from fat stores. So, while I am not opposed to IF, I suggest you experiment with it carefully to see if your body responds to it.
Remember, multiple conditions will impact your ability to do this, such as diabetes, medications taken, medical conditions, etc. Make sure you are not hurting your body as you do it.
So, all that to say, Intermittant fasting could work if you do it right, monitor your evening meals, and add a good and steady workout program to your life.
