Supporting non‑Fellowed rural doctors through the 2026 TFP workshop series 🩺

Our first Towards Fellowship Program (TFP) professional development workshop for 2026 was held on Saturday 28 February, focusing on Dermatology and the identification, treatment and management of skin cancers.

TFP workshops support doctors in rural South Australia who are on a pre-Fellowship or Fellowship pathway, providing targeted clinical and practical learning, plus the chance to meet and connect with rural colleagues. Each session is delivered by rural-experienced Medical Educators and subject matter experts.

Dermatology workshop participants shared that the interactive presentations provided an excellent learning experience, extending their knowledge, practical skills and confidence in managing dermatological presentations.

📅 Our next workshop, Pain Management in Rural General Practice, will be held as part of our RG26 Conference on Friday 22 May.

Medicine students experience the role of an RG Obstetrician in Murray Bridge 🩺

Twenty-two medicine students from University and University travelled to Murray Bridge on 28 February to immerse themselves in learning and working alongside experienced RG Obstetricians and rural midwives for the two-day R2R Medicine RG Obstetrics Clinical Experience.

Thank you to Dr Mark Herrmann, Dr Caitlyn Skinner, Dr Millie Williams and Dr Dianne Carr, who demonstrated the multi-disciplinary obstetrics environment supported by local and midwives, Tanya, Kelly, Bronwyn and Lou 🫶

Students shared that the experience strengthened their understanding of the role of RG Obstetricians and the valuable support offered by regional midwives. Several students commented that the exposure has encouraged them to considered future rural training.

We look forward to the R2R Medicine RG Anaesthetics Clinical Experience coming up 28-29 March in the Barossa Valley.

R2R Clinical Experiences offer final year South Australian medicine students the opportunity to experience what a rural career and lifestyle can be like.

RDWA would like to congratulate the 2025 R2R Intern cohort on completing their PGY1 training year 👏

The R2R Intern Program provides an immersive placement where interns based in metropolitan hospitals live and work in rural South Australian communities, gaining experience that goes far beyond clinical exposure.

Last year, 50 first year interns completed a rural rotation supported by RDWA and the practices hosting them in country.

✨ This week, six of those doctors have commenced their Rural Generalist Fellowship training, with a further ten doctors indicating they plan to apply for a Rural Generalist or GP training pathway in 2027.

Rural Generalists (RGs) bring a specialised clinical skillset and a whole of life perspective to care 🫶

The first Road to Rural Interns for 2026 are heading off on their rural rotations! 🩺

The R2R Intern Program provides doctors with a full immersion into rural medicine - experiencing what living and working in rural is really like. Interns will see a diverse range of clinical cases, experience emergency and on-call work, rapidly develop skills, and gain confidence and independence while being an integral part of the health team.

Interns attend an orientation session at RDWA prior to commencing their 10-week rotation for a refresher on practical skills for general practice, what to expect in the local practice, and information about the support available to them.

We wish them a great rural generalist and community experience!
