WHY WE NEED NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
Finally after more than 50 years, leading medical journals now recommend all adults take multi-vitamins. The New England Journal of Medicine & the Journal of the American Medical Association have concluded:
• Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone
• Inadequate intake of several vitamins has been linked to chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, cancer & osteoporosis
• Suboptimal folic acid levels including vitamins B6 & B12 are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, neural tube defects, colon & breast cancer. Low levels of vitamin D contribute to osteoporosis & bone fractures & low levels of antioxidants (vitamin A, E & C) increase the risk of several chronic diseases
WHY WE CAN'T DEPEND ON FOOD ALONE FOR ESSENTIAL NUTRITION
1. The average Australian is overfed & undernourished. It's no secret, just look around you. Most people are gaining weight. If you're like most Australians, you're consuming fabricated convenience foods high in calories but low in nutritional food value. This type of diet leads to subclinical or marginal deficiencies that lead to vague health complaints such as nervousness, recurring minor infections, general aches & pains, difficulty concentrating, irritability, depression, muscle weakness, fatigue, insomnia & just not feeling right. A recent study by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture survey of 20,000 people, found not a single person was consuming adequate levels of all vitamins & minerals. In this study, the percentage of Americans we deficient as follows: 90% deficient in vitamin B6, 75% in magnesium, 68% in calcium, 57% in iron, 50% in vitamin A, 45% in vitamin B1, 41% in vitamin C, 34% in vitamin B2, 34% in vitamin B12..........& the list goes on. There are hundreds of medical studies to suggest that every member of your family is deficient in one or more essential nutrients
2. Modern mass-production agriculture depletes nutrients from the soil without ever replenishing them. The application of synthetic fertilizers stimulates the growth of plants, however the nutrient content is missing. So when we bite into that healthy salad or slice of whole wheat bread, we're getting less nutrition today than from the identical foods grown in the same soil 50 years ago
3. Most of the food we eat is processed in one way or another. Processing means foods are exposed to heat, light, oxygen or drastic change in temperature & humidity. This exposure causes the destruction of vital but fragile nutrients. Examples of processing include baking, milling, grinding, boiling, cooking etc
4. All foods deteriorate as they age & is a major problem for the food industry. Chemicals are added to preserve foods giving them a longer shelf life. Unfortunately, despite chemicals, the nutrient content of foods declining over time, eventhough they look the same. Fresh fruits & vegetables are often sprayed, gassed or fumigated to make them look ripe & fresh. What we see as healthy looking isn't always as it seems
5. 50 years ago we may have not needed multi-vitamins, however our current environment, daily stress, commercial lifestyle & exposure to disease & chemicals warrants supplementation of antioxidants, vitamins & vital minerals
6. We dump nearly six billion pounds of chemicals into our environment every year. While some of it ends up in our food, the majority is in our air & water. Medical research has clearly established that environmental chemicals contribute to degenerative diseases
MAGNESIUM- Over the past 19 years I have recommended Magnesium to many clients. Magnesium comes in different salts (forms) from oxides to sulphates to chelates etc. Magnesium Oxide is basically a laxative & not a recommended form to consume if trying to increase a magnesium deficiency. Unfortunately, many magnesium supplements available in supermarket & pharmacy are an oxide form due to its cheap cost of manufacture. I recommend a mixed form of magnesium which does not include oxides & can be found in Oriental Botanicals Magnesium Excel - an excellent mixed form of magnesium. Always remember a health supplement should mimic a food thus making it a genuine natural supplement
