We’ve had a lot of questions lately about the recent NDIS funding changes, so here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand what’s happening 👇
🗓️ What’s changed?
From 19 May 2025, the NDIS has changed how funding is made available — not how much you receive.
Instead of receiving your full plan budget all at once, funding will now be released in smaller sections called funding periods. These are designed to help participants manage their supports and budgets more effectively throughout the year.
Each plan will still have the same total funding amount, but how you access it depends on your supports and plan type.
💰 How it works:
Funding is divided into smaller time-based instalments, usually every 3 months (quarterly).
For some supports — like Supported Independent Living (SIL) or other ongoing high-cost supports — funding may be released monthly instead.
One-off or upfront supports (like assistive technology purchases) may still be released in full at the start of the plan.
Unused funds from one funding period will automatically roll over into the next, so you won’t lose that money during your plan.
🚫 What you can’t do:
You cannot access or “borrow” funds from future periods before they’re released — unless there are special circumstances and the NDIS approves it.
👥 Who does this apply to?
Only new or reassessed plans will include funding periods.
Existing plans will stay the same until they’re reviewed or renewed.
Your NDIS plan will clearly show your total funding and the dates for each funding release.
💬 Who can help?
With your consent, your plan manager or support coordinator can:
- View your funding breakdown
- Track how much has been spent
- Monitor what’s left for each funding period
If you’re self-managed, you’ll be able to see this information directly through the NDIS myplace portal.
🌟 In summary:
✔️ Same total funding
✔️ Released monthly, quarterly, or upfront depending on your plan
✔️ Unused funds roll over to the next period
✔️ No borrowing from future funding periods unless NDIS approves
If you’re unsure how these changes affect your supports, reach out to your plan manager or NDIS planner for personalised guidance.
