We’ve had a lot of questions lately about the recent NDIS funding changes, so here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand what’s happening 👇

🗓️ What’s changed?

From 19 May 2025, the NDIS has changed how funding is made available — not how much you receive.

Instead of receiving your full plan budget all at once, funding will now be released in smaller sections called funding periods. These are designed to help participants manage their supports and budgets more effectively throughout the year.

Each plan will still have the same total funding amount, but how you access it depends on your supports and plan type.

💰 How it works:

Funding is divided into smaller time-based instalments, usually every 3 months (quarterly).

For some supports — like Supported Independent Living (SIL) or other ongoing high-cost supports — funding may be released monthly instead.

One-off or upfront supports (like assistive technology purchases) may still be released in full at the start of the plan.

Unused funds from one funding period will automatically roll over into the next, so you won’t lose that money during your plan.

🚫 What you can’t do:

You cannot access or “borrow” funds from future periods before they’re released — unless there are special circumstances and the NDIS approves it.

👥 Who does this apply to?

Only new or reassessed plans will include funding periods.

Existing plans will stay the same until they’re reviewed or renewed.

Your NDIS plan will clearly show your total funding and the dates for each funding release.

💬 Who can help?

With your consent, your plan manager or support coordinator can:
- View your funding breakdown
- Track how much has been spent
- Monitor what’s left for each funding period

If you’re self-managed, you’ll be able to see this information directly through the NDIS myplace portal.

🌟 In summary:
✔️ Same total funding
✔️ Released monthly, quarterly, or upfront depending on your plan
✔️ Unused funds roll over to the next period
✔️ No borrowing from future funding periods unless NDIS approves

If you’re unsure how these changes affect your supports, reach out to your plan manager or NDIS planner for personalised guidance.

🌟 Client Shout Out! 🌟

Today at CNSA, we want to highlight one of the incredible participants we have the honour of supporting. He has shown amazing dedication to his goals, and despite the challenges he faces due to his disability, he continues to work hard each day to build his strength and independence. 💪

With the support of his dedicated team, he’s been engaging in a variety of activities — from daily exercises and mobility training to fun sessions like colouring in to strengthen his upper limbs. Today, he reached an exciting milestone, completing 60 squats in one morning! 🎉

His witty remarks and can-do attitude are an absolute joy and we are blessed watching him grow more independent each day. We’re so proud of his determination, positivity, and ongoing progress, and we can’t wait to see what he achieves next! 💙

Support Coordination vs Social Work – what’s the difference?

While both roles are focused on supporting people, they serve very different purposes:

🔹 Support Coordinators work within the NDIS system, helping participants understand and use their plans, link with services, and build independence.

🔹 Social Workers take a broader approach, supporting people through social, emotional, family, housing, financial, and wellbeing challenges – often extending beyond the NDIS, including advocacy, counselling, and crisis support.

At Community Nursing SA, we value both roles and the unique ways they empower participants to achieve their goals and live more fulfilling lives 💙

September is Dementia Awareness Month 🩵

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of cognitive symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, and personality changes that progressively interfere with daily life.

Despite its widespread impact, misconceptions about dementia persist. In Australia, for example, a national survey revealed that one in five adults mistakenly believe dementia is merely a natural part of getting older, and fewer than one in three feel confident knowing how to reduce their risk. This highlights the critical need for education to promote early detection, reduce stigma, and ensure better outcomes for individuals and their families.

Dementia Awareness Month, and specifically initiatives like Australia’s Dementia Action Week, aim to improve public understanding, reduce stigma, and foster more inclusive communities.

Spreading accurate information, showing empathy, and encouraging conversations are all powerful steps toward creating a more understanding and dementia-friendly society.
