Sweet N’ Sour Study - Adelaide

Sweet N’ Sour Study - Adelaide Participate in our study on artificial sweeteners in 2025 from the Centre of Research Excellence in Translating Nutritional Science to Good Health

The use of low-calorie (or “non-nutritive”) sweeteners has increased greatly in recent decades because they are perceived as healthy replacements for sugar. However, large population studies suggest that regular intake of these sweeteners can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This study is designed to investigate whether different low-calorie sweeteners are more or less prone to affect blood glucose control. We will also test which sweeteners affect glucose absorption from the intestine, and whether they alter the types and amount of bacteria present in the intestine. Upon completion of our study (Approx. 5-week duration from beginning to end with four half-day study visits), participants will receive an honorarium of up to $350 via EFT transfer. Eligibility requirements
1. have not been diagnosed with any form of heart disease or diabetes
2. no significant health issues or medications that may influence gastrointestinal motor function, body weight or appetite
3. no kidney, liver or iron deficiencies
4. aged 18-70, healthy, BMI 18.9-30kg/m2
5. smokes less than 10 cigarettes a day
6. not pregnant, breastfeeding

All artificial sweeteners are surely not created equal from a health perspective. They all vary in their sweetness, amount absorbed into the bloodstream, and the degree to which they pass through to the large intestine and interact with our gut microbiome. So are their effects on blood sugar the same? Complete the online questionnaire via our bio to register your interest in our study and help answer this question.

This benefit was attenuated by adding either sugar or artificial sweetener. However, why is this the case? Complete the online questionnaire via this link to register your interest in the study help answer this question.

Artificial sweeteners are commonly marketed as the safer alternative to sugar to prevent diabetes. However, large population studies suggest an increased risk of type 2 diabetes amongst habitual consumers of sweeteners (see comment). Help us work out why! Check out the video for a short interview with the lead investigator for the Sweet N’ Sour Study, explaining that the receptors stimulated by artificial sweeteners are not only found in the mouth, but throughout the body.

In this episode we hear how Professor Chris Rayner is uncovering the unhealthy truth about artificial sweeteners.
